I only literally /just now/ created this account, and purely to ask this question alone. I apologize if it is in the wrong area or formatted incorrectly.
To the point: My grades are awful, and the semester is nearing an end. I’m only a part-time student as of now, though I plan to become full-time asap. Biology Education major.
For clarification, none of my classes are particularly difficult. Conversely, they’re ridiculously easy. I feel stuck in high school all over again. So why are my grades poor? I happened to miss one very substantial assignment in one class, and another one in a separate class. This could not have been avoided on my part due to circumstance, but incidentally, these assignments apparently cannot be made-up at all. So despite having done incredibly well on all other assignments in both classes, I currently have C’s. And with the remaining assignments in this semester, including the finals, the absolute most I can get my grade up to is a low B in one, and a high C in the other.
Two C’s out of a mere four classes is extremely disappointing. If I were to hypothetically do perfectly next semester, or every following semester for the rest of my academic life, could I overcome this?
Perhaps I am being irrational? Academia is literally the only thing I have in life, though. So yeah, I’m an anxious loser right now.
What possible circumstances caused you to miss the assignments without the ability to make them up? If it’s a medical/family type emergency I would think most Professors would allow a make up. Sure you can overcome it. Start by showing up and doing the work. Good luck.
It’s by no way the end of college. You are not a loser. The only thing you gave up was the chance to graduate with a 4.0. A less than 4.0 GPA does not a loser make. Thing is, if you don’t want to feel this way in the future, you have to figure out how to get things accomplished in spite of adversity. That’s what a lot of students do, study and go ahead and take tests when they are sick or something tragic happened in their lives, stay up into the wee hours of the night when a paper is due, skip parties and other fun stuff, whatever it takes. If you don’t like this feeling, you can make different choices.
College isn’t HS all over again…you see that because you can’t just miss assignments. Just like when you are in the working world, you can’t just miss assignments.
Did you talk to the professor ahead of time? After the fact?
Why did you miss it? You forgot? Work? Sickness? Family issue? Vacation?
Realize that the syllabus is a contract. You need to do what is in it.
If you have issues during the year, talk to your professor/Disability office.
Like my daughter was in the hospital for a week during the semester. She kept in contact with her professors. When she got back to college, she talk to the Dean of Students who put her in touch with the Disability office where she got accommodations for extra time on assignments. She still had to them and catch up on her work, but she got the official ability to be late if necessary.
So college will work with you, but you can’t just blow off stuff and expect to be able to be late on assignments. You need to be up front or work through their system.
C’s aren’t terrible…you now know what to do. Your GPA will go up! Keep at it!
