Hello,
I just finished my freshman year of college and I ended with a 3.261 as an overall GPA and a even 3 as my BCPM GPA. I will still be in the honors program but what would you gives suggest I do? Should I still try or should I use it as a base plate to jumping off and explain that I was getting used to college in essays? My grades from freshman year follow:
1st semester:
Organic Chem I - C - 3 credits
Physics 205N - C+ - 4 credits
Eng 101 - A- - 4 credits
ALS 103 - A (intro class) - 1 credit
BIT 210 - A- (research class) - 3 credits

2nd semester:
Organic Chem I Lab - A- - 1 credit
PY 208M - B - 4 credits
BIT 211 - A- (research class) - 2 credits
ST 311 - A- - 3 credits
MA 242 - A - 4 credits
USC 100 - A - 1 credit
IP Topics class (GEP course) - B - 3 credits

You still have three years left to bring up your GPA before you apply for med school. Learn from your mistakes and do better. If you want to get into med school, keep your head up and persevere

If I did better the next 2~3 years then could I use this as an essay talking about my bad habits and how I got rid of them ? Or should I just refrain from mentioning it on application because I am sure it will be an interview question in the future.

I have met med students who told me that they usually do not ask about grades in interviews. They explained to me that if an interview invite is given to you, your grades were good enough and they won’t waste time asking about GPA or MCAT. The med students stressed that you must use life experiences in your interview to show you are a human being and would be a great doctor.

P.S. I did pre-med track first semester of my freshmen year and I chose to drop it. I moved on to a different path

Do you use AP credits or placement test to place out of Chem 1. It is not a good idea unless you are in a tier-2/3 state school. Now, you may need to take it anyway to prop up the science GPA. See the thread below.
