One of my true passions is improvement and revitalization of urban areas. Therefore, I'm considering double majoring in Urban Studies and Economics for undergrad, and then hopefully attending graduate school for Urban Planning (possibly at Harvard or USC).

Does this sound like a solid plan to satisfy my interest in urban planning, development, etc.? What kind of job prospects would I have? Salary?

bump

Not a bad idea at all. During your undergrad years do some traveling, both in the US and abroad, to experience life in some of the world’s mega-cities. During summers volunteer, go for internships that expose you to the field. Network, network, network.

I’m not an expert at pay levels but I would say as a generality that there plenty of opportunities with NGOs and governmental agencies specializing in urban issues (and plenty of need) but the pay is moderate. Not a get rich quick career, but rewarding and interesting.

Later in their careers, do some planners transition into developing (where there may be more money to be made)?

Hate to do it again, but bump
