So, I am a rising junior in high school. I started interning at a non-profit but it turned out to be even worse than my last internship which involved menial labor (photocopying, filing etc.). I like the work environment but I feel completely worthless...my parents think that I could spend my time and energy into something more productive rather than working for free. I think it's too late to even back out from the work now and the least I can ask my supervisor is a letter of recommendation, right? But since I am not doing any worthwhile work, what would she even write about me?

Any advice on this issue?

what do you realistically expect to contribute as someone with 2 years of high school education?

^this.

I wouldn’t stress about it. Anyways, sometimes work just isn’t fun! Most high schoolers I know of never had an opportunity for an internship, youre already ahead of the game. so I would recommend to just wait it out and try for something better next year.

Good luck!

Working for free while you’re in high school = volunteering/community service

If you don’t feel passionate about what you’re volunteering for, then you shouldn’t have agreed to do it. Hopefully they are not working you too much.

Any letter of recommendation you get for “working for free” in a job you don’t like while you’re still in highschool is going to be meaningless. A reference from a supervisor at McDonalds would mean more. I suggest, find an actual paying job and quit.

So high school internships are basically useless? Should I even put it on my app?

Add it into your community service hours. You are a volunteer.

Thanks, all! Time to look for a job

of course you can put it on your application
