Bad News.....

Matt McGann posted today,

"It looks like our early application numbers for this year will be up more than 10% versus last year."

MORE THAN 10%!!!!!!
Can the acceptance percentage get any lower?

Sure. It's nowhere near as bad as Juilliard yet!

tear
Theres no way im going to get in
X-(

There is no way of knowing if those 10 percent are competitive applicants. How many more applications is that, like 300? Don't sweat it.

Edit: didn't see that he said early. 300 would be about right. Damn.

^They probably are, though. MIT appeals to a smaller subset of people than schools like the Ivies, and math-science people are typically good at school, at least in my experience.

But at the same time, it doesn't really matter. Getting into MIT was already practically a lottery - now it's just a little more of one! Ah ha ha... okay, never mind, I'm really depressed now. Shall we guess what the number's going to be this year? 12% accepted? 10%? Hoo boy.

Not necessarily. I know of like 5 kids applying to MIT from my school who are applying for the humanities program thinking they'll get considered separately because they don't want math/science. A couple haven't even taken basic Chem or Physics...

The applicants looking for an angle into MIT by major should have already known that intended major is not considered in the admission process. Also available in the blogs is the info that at least 70% of applicants meet the criteria for acceptance.

Wow..I'm depressed. I've been so restless because EA decisions are coming out soon, now reading this post is just making me even more restless and anxious. It seems like my chances of getting in has just been lowered even more...I went from a small fish to a microbe in the ocean...lol

I hope that if you haven't already done so, you'll begin working seriously on the applications for other schools on your list. It's an unfortunate fact of life that, in all likelihood, more than 6 of every 7 early action applicants will not be admitted when EA decisions go out in a few weeks. This includes many really fantastic students. Some applications will be outright turned down, and others will be deferred to regular action for further consideration (and some of those will be admitted during regular action). It's not easy or fun for us to have to give bad news to so many students, but it's a reality that we all must live with. So, do yourselves a favor this week and work a bit on your regular action applications. As I like to say, plan for the worst, and hope for the best.

That's pretty good though :)

Because...according to Matt's post they took/will take about 1/7 ~ 14%
Last year it was 377/2965 ~ 12.7%

He-he-he

Good luck, people! :)

Sounds good, but the reality will be more like 377/(2965*1.1)=11.6%.

Good luck to all, but listen to Matt's advice.

Wow, it must be hard for the admission counselors to have to REJECT 6 out 7 applicants, who are probably all amazing! It HAS to be random or something...

Well, he says that 70% of applicants are eligible, which means 30% are not. 30% of 7 is 2.1, so roughly, out of 7, there are 5 people competing for one spot.

But still, that's 5 people who have mostly As, good SAT scores, and good ECs, and probably pretty good essays. Yikes!

That's 70% of regular applicants, not EA.

No, that's 70% of total applicants.

Which means it's probably even worse for EA! Yikes again...
