bad science gpa but good total gpa

i have a 3.7 total gpa but a 2.9 science gpa. I am a first year pre med student aiming for a DO program. I have taken 4 science courses 2 chem, bio 1, and calculus. I got 2 B+ and one C in cal the rest of my grades have been A s. I am waiting on the second gen chem grade but will med schools care about my one C in the math course? honestly I am very shocked at how low the science gpa is. I don't know what I should do and I am worried about my second cal class for fall. thank you for your time

Since your only a first year premed, your best bet is to dilute your science gpa. If your current major is in one of the natural sciences, then hopefully you’ll be able to achieve an A in all the upper level courses. Since you’re going for a DO, I think a competetive GPA would be around 3.3-3.4? Therefore, it is definitely possible. Also with a DO it would be highly advisable to retake that C in calc, seeing that DO schools will take the new grade and forgo the original (someone correct me if im wrong). Honestly, do not fret about it too much, but give it all your all the next three years. I would think you still have a realistic chance for a MD as well.

From what i have heard my school will not let me retake a class that was passed with a C or better. Thanks for your advice and i agree i will take a lighter load next semester. I was trying to get all the core science classes in before the new mcat came out. At least that is what my pre med adviser advised. With my chem grade i have a 3.1 science gpa and that is not competitive enough. I have to choose to take one or two of the following next semester Cal II, ochem I, or molecular and cellular biology. Bio won t really be a problem I am doing research with the bio teacher but I m scared about the other classes i can t afford to get anything but an A. any suggestions?

Is Calc 2 required for your major? Very few allopathic medical schools require Calc 2 (I’m unsure about osteopathic requirements, but I imagine they’re similar.) If you don’t have to take it (and would only be taking it to satisfy med school requirements), I’d skip Calc 2, pick one of the others, and round out your schedule with something interesting but easy so you don’t add much more academic stress–allowing you to focus on bio or organic.
