Bad year then downward transfer?

I had taken about a years worth of courses at CC and transfered to a small College. All told I completed about 60 credits with a 4.0. Then I went to UMich and had a horrid year (major illness, mother with cancer and I'm her primary care giver....not to mention I'm a returning student with 4 children to care for) and my grades SUCKED (3.1 overall that year...with 1 C). I realized I couldn't keep up at that pace and decided to take a break. I went back to CC just to keep my mind fresh. When it came time to re-enroll this year I realized I truly won't be able to go back. Mostly because my mom is only getting worse and I just can't care for her and my kids while staying competitive at that type of school. Every course since I left UMich has also been 4.0, but I'm worried that whole year will look terrible. I keep reading that trying to fool the system or inflate your grades is looked upon very badly, but that's just not what's happening here.

What, if anything, can I do to address this issue if I decide to pursue law school?

Many law schools allow an addendum in their respective application. If you feel there is anything you would like to explain to the admissions officers you would do it there. It is really up to thier allowance and your writing skills from there though.
