Hello,
As the title stated, I bailed out of Aero last semester and currently a Bio intended undergrad student. But the idea and work environment of an engineer still very much interests me. I was originally in an approved program but after overestimated myself and slacked off the first semester of college (I got a B in Cal I and only a C+ in Chemistry I), I freaked out and stressed so much I thought I wasn’t capable of this after all. Also we had a group project during the time. Though the end result was very good (our team actually won), I felt terrible. Firstly, I’m bad at giving presentations to begin with. I’m extremely shy and my accents keep slipping out when I’m nervous (I wasn’t born in the US). Secondly, I felt like I didn’t contribute that much to the team and it was this one guy one-handedly carrying us. I did not speak up much since I felt like I had bare minimum knowledge of engineering.
So my concern right now is should I switch back to engineering, as it is the one major that interests me the most? I accept the fact that I may graduate a semester or a year late. But if I work hard, do you think I’ll be able to get a MS? I’m not particularly smart, but when putting work in, I can be hanging above average. There will be design projects and many presentations in the future, are they stressful? If I don’t do well in presentations, what is my chance of landing an internship during college? And is not knowing engineering principles prior to college a disadvantage? (My partner of last semester was used to fixing cars and he seemed to know a lot about how a machine should operate.)
Thank you for reading through my lengthy and (somewhat) pathetic post. But I really do need some advice and honest opinions right now, preferably from students in the field.
- There will be design projects and many presentations in the future, are they stressful?
I find them stressful, but they exist in many degrees, and you get used to them.
- And is not knowing engineering principles prior to college a disadvantage?
Completely unnecessary. You will not be at a disadvantage.
- But if I work hard, do you think I'll be able to get a MS?
I am a little confused by this question – why an MS?
- If I don't do well in presentations, what is my chance of landing an internship during college?
Getting internships is based on grades, work experience, and interview skills. The skills needed for presentations may be useful (ex. you don’t want to fail your presentations because then you won’t get good grades, and speaking to strangers about your work is similar in presentations and interviews). But you can get better at presentations, and it’s not a direct correlation between not liking presentations and not getting a job.
I would encourage you to try it. It sounds like you want to. Give it your all this time and don’t slack off.
Thank you for your reply. Getting MS was my original goal as I think it would be more useful in looking for a job. I feel like a BS won’t get me far. Am I wrong? And yes, my grades are bouncing back this semester and I am anticipating an A for Chemistry II and B+ or better in all other classes. I’m still very anxious tbh. I can’t keep switching back and forth between unrelated majors.

Check out the requirements for jobs at SpaceX as an example. I’m seeing mostly “bachelor’s in X Engineering or related”
