Balanced vs. Focused Schedule

I am about to finalize course requests for senior year, but I noticed that I’m very STEM focused in the courses I chose. Out of the classes I signed up for, I’m only taking one humanities course per semester, I’m taking distance calculus at a very good tech school in my state, and the rest are all science. AP Psychology, which I plan to take, is listed as a social sciences course, when in fact it’s really STEM. At first I was advised to create a more balanced schedule, but considering that my extracurriculars are mostly medical, I’m taking AP Biology, AP Psychology, and Honors Anatomy (all three of which pair well together, I’ve heard), and I took a more humanities focused schedule this year, would a STEM heavy schedule still work against me in college admissions?

You’re fine as long as it’s rigorous. Colleges like students who go in depth based on their passions

Colleges usually recommend four years of English and three or four years of the same foreign language, if you don’t have those already. Other than that, it’s okay to specialize.

Okay thanks. I’m dropping from 6 APs junior year to 3 APs senior year, but the Calculus course I’m taking is offered by Georgia Tech, so in effect it’s 4 APs…would this still be okay?

If you’re committed to taking a college-level class, from an actual university, I would think that’s somewhat admirable and surely noticed by colleges. Plus, you could possibly even gain credit for that Calculus class.

Personally, one of the Science and Arts Colleges that I’m applying to at a University requires 3 years of history, 4 math, 4 science, etc. Instead, I’m more science-focused (it IS my strong suit), so I will be taking a total of 7 classes of science in total for my 4 years of high school. I think that It’s not a problem at all, as it shows how focused and dedicated I am to the sciences, especially since I’m shooting for pre-med

Thanks!

Make sure you are taking meeting your HS graduation requirements.
THen look at colleges of interest and see what their HS classes requirements are.

For pre-med…don’t worry so much about only taking STEM classes…beleive me, there are a zillion STEM focused pre-med applicants. What are you going to major in? You don’t major in “pre-med”, but you can major in anything you want (as long as you take the pre-requisites). You want to have some balance…no med school will care that you took HS anatomy. It is good for YOU at this point because it will help you figure out if you like medicine, but colleges don’t care.

TL;DR: Make sure you can write and speak in addition to your STEM classes…don’t specialize because you think it is an advantage…it isn’t. Do it because you are interested in it.
