Ballad of Pre-Med Majors and Good GPA (Aye? Nay?)

Good people of College Confidential, I hereby present another dilemma yours truly only recently discovered himself in.

I am very interested in pursuing a medical degree however I am in a bit of a conundrum. There are a number of majors I am interested in, but I wish to know how difficult it is to maintain a good GPA - and at the off chance I change my mind or an alien invasion occurs - pursue a career in that said major. (Do kindly note I do not have a degree at the moment, am studying a local community college, I'm in my mid 20s and am making my living as a freelance writer).

The universities I have in mind are all UCs since I reside in California; Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz and L.A in particular. (I am also not averse to transferring to an out of state school as I can afford some and finance some).

Economics
Managerial Economics
Business
Management Science
Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior
Psychology
Cognitive Science
English (with concentration in Creative Writing)

Thank you for your time.

Study whatever it is that interests you the most, not whatever gets you a higher GPA- while GPA is extremely important for medical school, what good will it do if you study something that you truly don’t enjoy? I am a physician, and I majored in French. I freely admit that I absolutely hated biology!

Well said PsychoDad10 (awesome name btw), but you see… these are the majors that do interest me. I would be equally happy with either of them. I would very much welcome any input about GPAs and how easy it is to find a career in either of these fields, should someone decide not to go for medicine if things change. Thank you =)

Transfer as a junior? That would be silly. You wouldn’t know your profs well enough to get LORs when needed. Either do all 4 years at a UC or all 4 years elsewhere…but don’t borrow to go elsewhere!

None of the majors listed are too “pushy”, you can do either, they are not engineering, the one that I would be concerned.
High GPA is achieved by striving for an A in every single class. Go for it! Best wishes!

Mom2CollegeKids; I’m at a CC at the moment, but plan on transferring to either a UC OR out of state, not to a UC and then to an out of state Uni. I hope that clarifies what I was going for, it would be proper daft to transfer to a UC from a CC and then from a UC to another school. Thanks for your input! I’ve been saving for over seven years now, but even then it’ll be pushing it. =)

MiamiDAP; That is very reassuring to hear, thank you! I have a 3.94 at the moment and I wish to maintain it.
