Ballet at Swarthmore?

My daughter loves everything about Swarthmore and wants to apply ED. However, she does ballet four days a week and its not clear if she could continue to study ballet at that level at Swat. She doesn’t want to be a dance major but she does want to take a somewhat serious class 3-4 times a week.

Swarthmore is in a consortium that includes Bryn Mawr. It’s possible – if she’s okay with commuting on the free buses that run about every 30 minutes between the campuses – to take her classes for dance at BMC. The dance studio is in a gorgeous location BTW, located in their main gate over the entry arch. Or she might want to consider applying to BMC instead? Not necessary but an option. It’s common for students to commute to the other campuses and the schools are set up to accommodate this, not just with transportation, but by sharing departments. Haverford has the studio arts, for example for BMC, while BMC has geology. Haverford has the linguistics dept that’s shared by all three schools. That sort of thing.

@Dustyfeathers Thank you! She’ll apply to BMC regulare decision if she doesn’t get into Swat. She’s just really into Swarthmore- good to be reminded about the consortium possibilities. Do you think making that trip 4 times a week is practical?

It depends on her schedule. The buses run regularly.

Four times a week may be difficult; three times is more likely doable. This is because most classes at Swat are either on a MWF or TTh schedule. Thus if she could clear, for example MWF late afternoons those would be free spots. The bus does take a fair bit of time to go between (30 minutes when the traffic is bad, which is often).
