I’ve read a number of articles in The Tab and The Stanford Review talking about the proposal to ban hard alcohol? Does anybody know whether a verdict has been reached?
Stanford parent here. My (limited) understanding is that no final decision has been reached yet. I believe a large percentage of the students signed a petition opposing this. Additional RUMORS are that the residential fellows are not happy either and that perhaps this might only be applied in all-freshmen housing. Regardless, most seem to be concerned that to implement this in any form would limit trust between housing staff and students and simply push drinking hard alcohol underground which would be less safe for students. Not sure if transports are up this year or not?? But the short answer is that no verdict has been reached.
Another article:
Thank you so much!! Do you know when a verdict will be reached? Also how much do you think this will affect the social life - does most drinking take place in the frat houses anyway?
In California, the legal drinking age is 21.
This proposal would affect very few students who are obeying the law.
Something like 91% of students voted against the ban - but from how I understand it Stanford is under no obligation to consider the student response. General sentiment on campus is that very few people think it’s a good idea as far as student safety is concerned. Not just students but also resident fellows (the “adults” who supervise dorms) generally seem against it.
Rumor has it that it will not be enacted by Hennessy but that the new president could push for it if he wanted to. It would mean instant unpopularity so it’s probably unlikely that the ban will be instituted anytime soon but it’s likely Stanford will do something to show that they’re taking it seriously. It could be something like changing up the frosh alcohol education program.
Isn’t pot banned, too? How is that working out?
