band - list accomplishments as a group or individual?

Hi,

I'm wondering how to write about band in my college apps.
I was in band for three years, and our marching band won many competitions.
Should I list the major competitions we won?
What kind of things would I write about band besides how many years I participated?
My essay topics will not involve band.

Thanks.

such a good question..free bump

Make sure it's clear that the competitions were won by the band that you belonged to.

If you are a section leader, soloist, conducted or composed the band's music, that would be worth noting.

It's nice that your band is good, but the awards would help you more if you'd won them as an individual such as if you had made All State.

I see.

I was thinking that since band is composed of 200+ members, and that my application is supposed to be about me, that an achievement by the band as a whole isn't so important to write about.
The competitions we won are numerous, and it would be redundant to list them all, in my opinion.
Should I just list two or three of the main ones?

I'd like some more opinions on this matter.

bump (10char)

I was in the 2006 Rose Parade, is that something I can put on my application?

quick bump

Sure, you can put being in the Rose Parade on your app, but I doubt it will mean that much unless you earned that distinction as an individual, not as part of a large group.

Being in a top-quality band like that is a good EC, but it's not really a personal achievement for you. I would not list the band's achievements under your own awards and achievements, unless you are somehow personally responsible (i.e., if you are the drum major/field conductor). If possible, you could list them with your ECs to show the quality of the organization you participated in.
