Are there any close banks near the campus, and preferably Unit 3?

BoA and Wells Fargo are on Telegraph. If you've been to Calso recently, there's a section in the "handbook" about banks and their exact locations.

There's a BofA on Telegraph and Durant and a Wells Fargo on Bancroft, off Telegraph. To get to the Wells Fargo from Unit 3, just cross the little tunnel where Yogurt Park and Cheese-n-**** is and its right there to your left.

Bank of America has more ATMs around campus (GBC, haas school, etc.) as well as in San Francisco (fisherman's wharf, etc.) where you'll need cash for public transport and stuff.

you can use the AC with Cal 1 card but what can a student do with bart?

Nothing. BART costs everybody the same.

Thank you guys!! I'm currently with WAMU so I guess changing banks would be the best idea. I'm getting a debit card (curse you November birth), so having a savings and checking account would be best? Does anyone have experience with debit cards and banks near Berkeley?

^ you don't need to change banks. There is a WAMU on West Side right next to the BART. Every AC transit bus and the BearTransit buses all go past it.

There are no wamu ATMs near southside/campus which makes it extremely difficult to get cash when you need it.

yea, but there are WAMUs in Berkeley. It isn't exactly clear where a person will live after there first year in dorms.

It might be a little annoying to go to the west side of campus to get cash without ATM fees, but -closing your bank account- over it? That seems a little drastic.

There are at least 3 bus lines that cross Telegraph, near the dorms, and go down to Center x Shattuck and the Downtown BART station. It's a 15-minute walk. It will require planning on your part, but seriously...

If you really need OMG convenience NAO!!11!1, BofA or Wells Fargo is your best bet as there are branches on both sides of campus.

^Exactly (10-char)

I have Wamu and there's a WaMu ATM machine in the food court area next to the Cal bookstore on lower Sproul. It's next to Coffee Spot inside the food court.

If you live in Unit 3 you'll pass through lower sproul a lot, so this ATM is really convenient. Not too many people know about it either. Just remember the food court area will close on weekends, so you'll have to withdraw money on weekdays.

You should just stick with WaMu, it worked out for me, and I lived in Unit 3 as well.

Plus their online savings account is great. The interest rate is 3.5% w/ no minimum balance or monthly charges. You only need a checkings account, which you already have Castel.

Question, doesn't using the ATM have a minor fee to it, like $1 or something?

Other than that, Thank you so much for the help, people! My friends make fun of me because I call CC my best e-friend. Hah.

As far as I know, most major banks don't charge fees for using ATMs from their own banks. If you use one of those little ATMs in convenient stores, Gypsy's, etc., then you'll be charged a small fee.

WaMu owns the ATM in the food court, so there's no fee.

what about CUBS??

^^ I rarely see anyone using that credit union. Plus they charge monthly fees for checking accounts unless you have over $200 in the account to waive the fees.

Go with Wells Fargo, BofA, WaMu, etc to get truly free checking/savings accounts. Such banks also have multiple locations and ATMs nationwide. Banking thru Charles Schwab is really great too... withdraw money from any ATM nationwide and Schwab will waive all ATM fees other banks charge. The only downside to Schwab is that there aren't any walk-in banks you can go to, so everything's online.

Sorry to bring up old thread: how do you withdraw money from an ATM w/o a service fee? Is it related to having a credit card from the bank or do we have to have a checking/savings account there or something?
