Banneker Key 2016

Same here, anxiously awaiting word.

Just got the email 5 minutes ago!

just got the email!!!

I got the email too! I’m excited

I got the email! Does anyone know what this means? Do we automatically get a partial scholarship or what?

Congrats to all of you! This is typically the wording for the BK scholarship. @jdawg88 , As a BK recipient you will either get the full scholarship or the partial. You will get a packet that gives you your interview date. My son was told last year on the the day of his interview that the decision is about 70% made before the interview. They just want to meet the person behind the application. They do a great job with presentations the day of the interview. Last year we had a nice lunch at Stamp and had several presentations about the school before my son’s interview. Good luck!

Thanks @mdneglag, do you know what kind of questions they ask? Also, do you know if the full/partial decision is based on anything in particular? Thanks again

Does anyone know what the breakdown is of full and partial scholarships offered to the 250 finalists selected?

If we haven’t received an email as of now, does that mean we are not being considered? Or do they send them out within a span of time?

To everyone who received email are you in state or oos

Most of my friends received them at 7:08PM - 7:10PM. Can anyone confirm that that’s when most received theirs?

Maybe there’s a chance they’re being sent in waves, I have no clue.

My S received his at 7:02, OOS.

No email about BK here, though in the preceding hour my DS got two other emails from UMD (one about a Terp sleepover visit and one reminding him to register for housing, though he already did that since it’s non-binding).

Super congrats to all the kids who got emails! We, non-emailed, are in MA. (Hoping still that they come in waves.) My sister went to UMD and loved it, so it’s still a real contender for us.

I’m out of state and received the email at 7:02 p.m. as well. I apologize if this question has already been answered on CC, but is it ever possible to request an alternate date? I have conflicts on two of the scheduled interview days and I’m a bit worried…

Hey everyone, congrats to those who got the email. Current UMD B/K freshman here, I just wanted to add: I NEVER got any sort of banneker key email, but I did get the packet in the mail with my interview date and all the deets. So don’t despair just yet! Btw UMD is pretty awesome haha

@jdawg88 The interview was very relaxed. They mostly talked to him about the sport he played and a few questions about his application. As I said before, it seems they just want to put a face to the application. As far as the full vs partial goes…the partial does not include room and board, but does pay for tuition and books. The full pays for all fees. They even paid for my son’s orientation fee. He ends up with a credit each semester. They credit the account for tuition, room and board and books. So far he has been able to buy used books so he end up getting a check back. Either scholarship is awesome. They don’t distinguish between the BK recipients so no one usually knows or cares if you got a full or partial. As a matter of fact, most of my son’s friends don’t even know he’s a BK recipient! He absolutely loves Maryland!

@jdawg88 I just realized I didn’t answer your other question. I really don’t know what they base the full or partial on. Really hard to know.

Did everyone’s email say the same thing? “Look for something in the mail” or was it something with more information about BK with interview dates?

@potatoesAreLove How do you know the interview dates?

@blue44
A current freshman recipient of the scholarship mentioned earlier in this thread that they got an email with this year’s dates (Feb 23, Feb 29, March 2).

The email is the “look for something in the mail”. You will then receive a letter/packet that says “you have been selected as a semifinalist” including an interview date. It also explains that “all students attending the event will be awarded either full or partial Banneker/Key Scholarships”.
