Hello there! I am a Banneker Key Scholarship Semifinalist and I have an interview on March 3. Since the first round of interviews was on February 25, I was wondering if some of the BK semifinalists that had their interview on this date could share some of their experiences (morning, lunch, INTERVIEW QUESTIONS, and tours). I would be really grateful! Also, I hear that there is going to be a snow storm... is everything still going to go as planned?
P.D. Got into University Honors, anyone else? :D

I too have my interview on March 3. I got into University Honors too! Whoop!

That’s awesome! I’ll probably see u there!! ;)

I have the interview tomorrow, too! But the weather predictions seems pretty scary for tomorrow; don’t know if I will be able to make it :S

DS has the interview tomorrow too. He’s written to the “bannekerkey@umd.edu” email asking what’s happening, but hasn’t heard anything back yet. Wondering if there’s any way they’d decide to postpone til another day…

I don’t want to scare you guys, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely that College Park will open tomorrow even long enough to send youse an email. You should bring up their webpage frequently during the night to see if they’re going to open. This looks like a significant winter storm in this area.

The rain has started nearby. It’s very light right now and the temp is 43 degrees. As temps drop the rain will turn over to freezing rain overnight and then start snowing in the early morning. So it won’t necessarily be an early closing, like, say, before we go to bed. I grew up in Philly and, relatively speaking, the metro DC is populated by snow wusses who will close schools at the first snowflake or drop of freezing rain. So look for the message to go up possibly by 4am.

If you are already on your way or you do come, plan to spend the night because there won’t be any melting Monday and temps on Tuesday will remain below freezing.

Here’s the latest forecast:

Statement as of 1:49 PM EST on March 02, 2014

… Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 PM this evening
to 6 PM EST Monday…

precipitation type… freezing rain… sleet… and heavy snow.

Accumulations… up to one tenth inch of ice… followed by 4 to
8 inches of snow.

Timing… rain changes to freezing rain and sleet from north to
south this evening then becomes heavy snow late tonight through
Monday.

Temperatures… falling into the lower 30s this evening… then
dropping into the lower 20s overnight and Monday.

Winds… north 10 to 15 mph. Gusts to 25 mph late tonight and
Monday.

Impacts… hazardous travel due to ice and snow through Monday.
Both the Monday morning and afternoon rush hours will be
affected. Power outages are possible with the combination of
ice and heavy snow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

This Winter Storm Warning is for heavy snow… sleet… and
freezing rain and means severe winter weather conditions are
expected. Significant amounts of ice and snow are forecast that
will make travel dangerous and potentially cause power outages.
Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel… keep an extra
flashlight… food… and water in your vehicle in case of an
emergency.

Snow wusses? ;))

Thanks @jkeil and @maryversity, for the insights and sympathy(?) I am definitely a snow wuss, and would much rather snuggle up at home tomorrow than brave our way to College Park. Doesn’t help that DS has a cold and is totally stuffed up and zonked on Sudafed right now.

I do think it would be nice if someone at UMD sent out an e-mail with info about what would happen in various scenarios, so we’d have some sense of whether to make our way over there tomorrow morning, which would likely be by metro and on foot–just how long a walk is it from the College Park metro to Stamps, anyway?

I agree with jkeil that if the University closes, the interviews will be postponed, but DS hasn’t heard anything “official” to that effect.

Hopefully everyone got this message but just in case, DS received this email a couple of hours ago. Btw, is there a specific dress code for the event?

The National Weather Service is predicting possible severe inclement weather within the next 48 hours around the Washington, D.C. region. Given this unpredictable weather development and with the safety of our students and the campus community in mind, here are the following contingency plans for the Banneker/Key event tomorrow:

UMD Opens at 10 a.m.
If the university has a delayed opening at 10:00 a.m., we request that you check-in at 10:30 a.m.

UMD Opens at 11 a.m.
If the university has a delayed opening at 11:00 a.m., the scheduled morning sessions will be cancelled. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. (Program will begin with the luncheon at 12:30 p.m.)

UMD Closed or delayed opening after 11:00 a.m.
If the university is closed, or if we have a delayed opening after 11:00 a.m., this event will be rescheduled for Monday, March 10.

We deeply regret this inconvenience. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Davies at bannekerkey@umd.edu.

Sincerely,

@momtimesfour
If the university doesn’t close, I don’t see any reason for them to not provide transportation to/from the metro to Stamp. The university has a busing system that circles between various parts of the university and the metro. On foot, it’s probably 20-30 minutes or so in normal weather conditions.

Boy, I’m glad that they let me have a Skype interview, because I’d have absolutely no idea what to do with myself in a winter storm.

Thanks very much, @momwquestions and @nhdmaniac! Because of DS’s cold, we’re secretly hoping for at least a delay, although I know that would be tough for people who are traveling from out of state.

And…we just heard that UMD is closed tomorrow. So the BK interviews will be on March 10. Good luck, all!

Well that was a surprise. Snow wusses. I’m glad tho for all of you who were supposed to do interviews tomorrow and would probably have to drive thru some nasty stuff. And for momtimesfour’s D who shouldn’t have to interview with her head all stuffed up.

UMD called me yesterday and told me that they were going to close for tomorrow. They talked with me and told me that my interview was going to be on Wednesday. They were actually really nice, and made everything possible for me to assist. I’m OOS

I arrived yesterday to Maryland and it has been really cold! But UMD helped me coordinate my interview.

Oh wow, sorry to hear you are stuck there until Wednesday…on the bright side, assuming they clean things up quickly, you can take advantage of Tuesday for exploring DC!

Metrobus service in DC and suburbs is closed Monday morning:

http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=5672

Indeed! I actually visited the campus today and took pictures since I hadn’t seen the university. Anxiously waiting for Wednesday to go there and meet everyone! Hope everything works out for everyone!

@astrogirl I am very happy to hear the University is being flexible for students who’ve traveled for this! I hope you have a fabulous visit!

this is a great opportunity, astrogirl, to research terps at play.
