Banneker Key 2016

I got the full ride! Congrats to everyone!!

Congratulations to all the excellent students and parents on the forum, you all earn it!! My daughter got a partial scholarship, and we feel tremendously grateful and lucky, go Terp!!

Congrats to your son, that’s amazing!! @ReminiscingDad

@safireonfire thank you! He’s so happy, we are all very proud of him and incredibly grateful to UMD!

We went to visit the campus on Maryland Day last Saturday and it was wonderful. We saw the Ellicott House and were told that the Gemstone students live on the second floor. Does anybody know whether these dorms are mainly doubles/triples or are there some singles as well? How is the bathroom sharing situation? Is there any possibility to move to Prince Frederick after a couple of years or are the Gemstone students bound for the 4 years to the Gemstone suites in the Ellicott House? Thank you!

Most only stay in Ellicott only in the first year and move onto different dorms or off-campus in following years I believe most rooms in Ellicott are doubles. My daughter landed up rooming with other Gemstone students in Oakland for Sophomore-Senior years. One benefit of Gemstone is that you are guaranteed on-campus housing as long as you are in the program. Some do option to live off-campus though.

Thank you @MDdad2012

@ReminiscingDad @Princetonian2020 What were your SAT/GPA? I really want to apply but I dont feel like my scores are high enough (3.80 GPA, 2100 SAT)

@1999HighSchooler - There is not separate application for B/K. When you apply to UMD via priority deadline, everyone is automatically considered.

When my DC interviewed last year (UMD Class of 2019), avg B/K stats were - 1510 (out of 1600), 4.6 wGPA. Maybe someone from Class of 2020 can post more recent stats.

@FromMD Any idea how that GPA is calculated? At my D’s school, no one has a wGPA of 4.6. It just doesn’t work with our scale.

@itsgettingreal17 - my understanding is UMD uses Montgomery County grading system - 4pt for regular classes, 5pt based for honors/APs/IBs. Someone correct me if I mis-spoke.

@FromMD thanks so much :frowning: Ugh I wont be considered for B/K because neither is high enough for me. What other options to I have for scholarships? My uwGPA is 4.55 and my wGPA is 3.81. My SAT is 1380.

I don’t think you will get much merit aid. :frowning: Your stats are slightly above average for admitted students. If you can raise your SAT or ACT, that will really help.
