For those of you who have taken Barbaro, is there any input you would like to add? The only ratings of her are on "Rate my Professor" but it's not too detailed and there aren't a lot of comments. Plus I heard she does a lot of proofs? How's Oberlin? (I've read bruinwalk already)

i never had oberlin but i would reccomend professor barbaro for math3c. i had her in the fall and she was really helpful except when she was gone for 1.5 week for a meeting. she has a very generous curve about 30% of the class had an A! 10% of the class is homework and there are 2 midterms + a final. if you do poorly on 1 miterm, she’ll drop it and make ur final worth more. lecture is pointless because she teaches straight out of the book. goodluck with 3C!

bump…

don’t take Oberlin! he talks way too fast and also gives off the vibe that he DOES NOT want to be there. he sighs into his microphone alot and in general just rambles on proofs, proofs, and more proofs. Good luck if you take him!

i would like to update this thread…barbaro is terrible…there are MANY bruinwalk reviews that are now available for her…she is a horrible teacher, with horrible tests and shes not a good teacher…SHE GAVE 30% As because it was her first time teaching the class…she DOES NOT GIVE 30% As anymore…OBERLIN IS A MUCH MUCH BETTER EASIER TEACHER

Yeah, I don’t like my grade that I got from Barbaro :[

wut did u get…gurantee its better than mine

Im willing to organize a CC sit-in infront of Barbaro’s office. I don’t think we would do anything particularly threatening. Just cry.

Barbaro’s class was horrible. I dreaded every day and always had to bring other things to do to keep myself entertained. She literally writes everything down that she says which made the class super slow!

With that said, I failed the first midterm, got a C on the second and a C on the final and ended up with an A- in the class. She has two grading options allowing you to drop a midterm so I think thats how I ended up with an A-.

wait how what was ur rank on the first two midterms and on the final?

[Ok I realize this is a little late, but I feel like it needs to be said in case she teaches again in fall or whenever] DO NOT TAKE BARBARO.

I took her last quarter (spring '10) despite the warnings I got from people I knew that took her in fall not to because I figured “Well I don’t know anything about this Oberlin guy and if the awfulness of my last 2 math professors indicates anything, he’ll probably suck, but at least I know what I’m getting into with Barbaro.”

Ohhh I was wrong. Barbaro spends her lectures writing EVERYTHING WORD FOR WORD from the book (which SUCKS) on the board. She fell about 2 weeks behind within the first month of class (but the material still felt too fast because she’d spend like an entire lecture on one example then cram 5 plus a proof or 2 into the next lecture). I felt like I never knew what to expect of tests…I basically got about the average on every test in that class even though I knew I was prepared for them. Except for the final (which was basically like 30% proofs, which I did not know were required since she had Oberlin “teach” them to us while she was at a conference in Barcelona–YES, the last 2 lectures which she had told us would be review at the end of the year were taught by Oberlin…who wasn’t that great either, basically he just rushed through proof after proof, no examples saying “well I don’t know what else Alethea wants me to show you guys…my class did this a long time ago… she didn’t really leave notes and don’t ask me about your final, I don’t know what’s on it.”) Anyway, the reason I didn’t do that well on the midterms was because she made them ENTIRELY too long and I don’t think I’ve ever been in a test at UCLA where that many people are still working when time is called (or for that matter, after time is called…coughcheaterscough…)

also, the first time she taught the class, she didn’t get as far in the material and just kind of gave up teaching the last section (which is really hard) so that wasn’t on the final…it definitely was on the spring final and worth A LOT of points. She also let her first quarter class have a notecard for notes on the final. Not us.

However there were a few positives (I guess)–everyone was in the same boat of not knowing what was going to be on tests and most people were confused about the material the whole time. Her office hours (I went to a couple) were okay and apparently for her first time teaching the class, she would always put things from office hours on the tests…I didn’t really notice it that much last quarter though. Also, Barbaro’s not a dumb or mean person…she’s actually really nice and very aware of her teaching weaknesses…she just hasn’t fixed them yet. And I doubt she will anytime soon.

Regarding Oberlin…for the few days I had him, he seemed like a decent person and professor. I know his averages on tests and stuff were way higher and didn’t hear a lot of complaints from people who had him, other than he writes really fast and it’s hard to keep up with his notes, but that’s all. I would probably recommend him over Barbaro.

I got tutoring (AAP) for this class and without it, I probably would have failed. Apparently, Covel tutoring wasn’t as good, but still helpful. So get tutoring if you can. No matter what professor you decide to take.

And keep in mind that even though it’s not calculus and most people have some background in probability, Math 3C is NOT an easy class. You have to keep up and study on your own if you want to do well. Good luck.

yah. agree with all of the posts above me.
I take back what I said about Oberlin. Barbaro is the WORST… i hate my math 3C grade
the final was so ridiculous and she didn’t even show up to the last week of class because she was on sabbatical?? she did this last quarter too. WHO does this??? and on top of that she makes her final super hard…

AND she NEVER responds to e-mails.

Oberlin’s not that great of a professor but at least he’s easy.

this might be irrelevant by now…but add me to the list of barbaro haters, my grade was brutal.

oberlin is easy peasy. he’s one of the professors that i actually like, he’s very straightfoward and his tests are never any harder than the homework problems he assigns. he also doesnt jump around a lot, unlike all the other horrible math profs that i’ve had in the past. imo, he doesnt write too fast, and his lectures are really easy to follow
