I'm really interested in attending Bard college, but have heard that their is a lot of drug use. Which is the main turn off for me as far as attending this school goes. Even if Bard has a lot of drug use is it something I should even worry about, I mean is it possible to avoid the drug scene there and still have a good social life? I would also appreciate some suggestions as far as colleges go that have an alternative artsy feel, as I'm told Bard does. If anyone has any insight on any of these topics I would appreciate a reply. Thanks!

Well if you’re interested in Bard, you might also be interested in Oberlin, Reed, and Wesleyan.

See if they have a substance-free dorm.

Thanks tk21769, I just checked it out and I guess they have substance free housing, along with smoke free housing so I guess that solves that. I would still like some input on similar schools if you guys have any ideas. Thanks again!

Edit- I just found this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/bard-college/378891-drinking-culture-bard.html, and i guess the substance free living is not really to legit, anyone care to comment on this? Thanks

All housing at Bard is smoke-free, as are all buildings in the State of New York — it’s a state law.

As far as drug use goes, here’s something directly from their web site regarding the “drug myth”:

*Myth 5. Bard is a place where you can do pretty much anything you want.

Reality: Students should make no mistake about this myth. Our reputation regarding the extracurricular life of students is all too sensational and all too false. Bard treats its undergraduates with the presumption of adulthood. But the rules regarding personal conduct and substance abuse are strict and enforced. The use of illegal drugs is not tolerated. Neither is underage drinking. Learning is a joyful but serious enterprise that requires time and hard work. We expect every member of our community to embrace the laws of the State of New York voluntarily and with conviction.*

Don’t worry about it. My D will be third-year this year and doesn’t smoke, drink, or do drugs. But she loves Bard and the friends she has made there.

In my experience, Bard is not really that different than many other colleges with respect to drugs or smoking, and I’ve visited quite a few with my kids.

Thanks for the responses, looks like I’ll be applying to Bard after all!
