My brother is interested in Bard and I was wondering what the drinking and partying culture is like. How intense is the party scene? Is there substance-free housing? If so, is it legit?

There is substance free housing, it is not legit.

What does "legit" in this case mean?

"Legit" is the difference between sub-free housing that's full of people who genuinely want to be sub-free and have no intention of using, and sub-free housing that's full of people whose parents made them sign up and have no intention of quitting.

Ah I see, so people at Bard light up alot?

2 on the prestigious "Reefer Madness" list published by Princeton Review.

yeah one of the best parties that ive been to at bard so far was in a “wellness” house…what a load of ********

how is the social life for those who do want to be sub-free?

My daughter is “substance-free”. No, really. Not just because she tells me she is.
She loves Bard. Now in her third year and sure, she says people smoke too much but that’s more cigarettes. She has plenty of friends who find plenty to do without resorting to drugs or drink. The reality is the “drug scene” at Bard is not that much different from any other LAC. As a parent who was in college in the seventies, I know most people eventually grow up and find life is just fine without drugs, and we also understand that it is possible to have used some without adversely affecting your life. Not everyone is alike and some handle their drugs or alcohol better than others. For my DD it’s the loss of some of the world’s greatest musicians to drugs and alcohol that makes her want to enjoy life without drugs.
