barely any volunteering... is that ok?

I’m a sophomore and have barely volunteered during high school. I went to FMSC a few times, but besides that, I’ve done nothing. How would colleges see this?

A lot of people talk about the importance of volunteering to show colleges that you care and that you have compassion for others. But what if you demonstrate it through ways that aren’t really considered volunteering yet still help others? (Will clarify down below).

I’m in a few extracurriculars: math team, FBLA, WYSE (STEM and english competition club), CS, and robotics team. Will be joining NHS next year, too. I’m not in any sports and I’m not in fine arts.

Also, I don’t plan on volunteering JUST to impress colleges. I already plan on giving back to my community through starting a Girls Who Code club at my middle school, which teaches middle school girls about computing, the fundamentals of computing, and solving an issue in their community using computing. It’s not volunteering, but it does help people, and it is something that I’m passionate about. I would rather do something like that than something that’s like packing food for the poor or volunteering at a hospital since I’m emotionally invested in it.

Oh and not sure if this is important, but I plan to major in STEM.

Volunteering is not important.

Do things you care about.

Focus on what you volunteer for, and not the hours you get. There’s no point in volunteering on one-off things if they don’t interest you.
btw It’s great that all your activities seem pretty focused towards STEM

@fretnot Thank you! I really want to focus on things that I actually care about because I feel like I’d be cheating myself by doing things like volunteering just for college apps.

Based on your current ECs and career goals, you seem to have a good thing going for you! Don’t worry about the volunteering/ community service portion (unless it’s a requirement for your HS). Also another good program for students pursuing tech is YWCA TechGYRLS. Here’s the link for more info:
