I took 1 AP class my sophomore year, didn't do so hot (85avg) so mom discouraged me from signing up for any more. Now from reading CC and articles about college admissions, I feel like I screwed myself over. Other than that, I've only taken 1 honor class. I signed up for AP Literature and Statistics last year but they didn't show up in my course requests. I didn't find out from my English teacher until the end of the year that I should have gotten in and it's too late to do anything about it now. I heard today that one other AP class opened up spots but it's not guaranteed that I'll get in.

I think I'll be pretty broken up if I don't get accepted to the colleges I want to go to (USC, UCLA, UCI). I've only started junior year & haven't taken PSAT, SAT or SATII's yet but with my mediocre grades (3.5gpa) & ECs, scoring low 1900's on practice SAT tests, it's not looking too good.

Is it worth signing up for a few-couple AP classes senior year? I feel like it's too late; it's not like colleges would get my AP test scores. Do they even look at my courses for senior year? & honestly, am I screwed having taken only 1 AP course?

I suggest that you don’t give up on the AP Literature and AP Statistics. Talk to your guidance counselor and let him/her know that it’s REALLY important that you take those AP courses, or else you won’t get into your preferred college.

Unfortunately, I’ve done everything I can. Both classes are full, I’ve gone to guidance, teacher, head of department, nothing to do about AP Lit & Stat. My only hope for an AP class this year is if they can squeeze me into AP psychology, which I’ll have to wait to find out.

Just because you didn’t get into the AP class doesn’t mean you can’t take the AP test in May. Are you the type who can self study?

If you are enrolled in Honors courses, will you still get the same GPA bump for an ‘A’?

Many schools do look at what you take your senior year. Nothing wrong with taking APs your senior year, I encourage it if you will actually pass the class and the test, because good scores will get you credit if applicable.

As far as getting into the schools you listed, they are ‘reaches’ for you, why not look for ‘matches’ instead. If your heart is set on UCLA and UCI then going the CC route may be the only way you can transfer in to finish at those schools.

@crester: I think I could; what are good AP courses to self study, english & history ones? So far I haven’t seen any weighted grades or added points from honor/AP classes, so maybe my school doesn’t do them. I will still try to get a few APs in before I graduate and read up about transferring. Thanks

Even if you don’t take the courses through your HS, you should be able to take the AP exams in May next year with your classmates. There are also other Virtual High School sources. Do a search here on CC --you may be able to find out more for CA students.

The last thing I would add is to look into dual enrollement classes through your local community college. Talk to your counselor and find out what other students at your school have done. If not dual enrollement, then take courses next summer at the cc.
