oh my goodness… ap tests are driving me nuts on top of swim team and jazz band. im gonna lose it soon i swear!

I’ve mapped out my schedule and realized that I don’t have a totally free weekend until June 25th! Arghhh

I’m feeling okay about AP exams…I’m pretty confident in US and Lang should be a snap. I’m more worried about Spanish…kind of resigned to the fact that a five is practically impossible for non-native speakers…

AP EXAMS ARE OVER! IM FREE! … i feel awesome

I KNOW!! best feeling ever, literally. plus i’ve had the week off from swim, so i’m just sittin on the couch right now, trying to give my brain some relief :D

now that the AP exams are over, my brain is dead! i have been having my “moments” lol!

for example today my friend and i got on the bus going the opposite direction!, how dumb did we feel when we realized the bus was going the wrong way!!!
but hey aps are over! i have the right to act dumb lol :p

i am not the only 1 this is happening to… right?

I still have SOO much work! >.< I have literally like 5 projects due in the next 1-3 weeks.

me too! no fair! i was free last week but now i have 2 (still!!) outline txtbooks >: ( … not cool!! lol

For those of you who don’t know what the IB diploma is, it’s basically a rigorous program that is equivalent to… a lot of AP’s.

Rank: top 25% of my class

You can’t get in if you don’t apply. ;)

Honestly your GPA/rank is a bit low but you have some great work experience. As calmom says “You can’t get in if you don’t apply” so go for it ;)

I really wanna visit Barnard soon! I love Columbia but I’ve heard some bad things about the administration and the only thing stopping me from applying to a bunch of LACs is the lack of research funding (research is a HUGE thing for me, even if LACs do tend to have better PhD placement than other universities… somehow I guess maybe the funding is good enough). I like state-of-the-art! lol
I’m worried though because I’ve read some bad things on students review (dotcom). Ughh I wanna visit for myself and ask students stuff! I’m tired of viewing it from across the street from SHP lol.

Hey there, I’m a junior in highschool from Utah and was drawn to Barnard several months ago as I looked though Liberal Arts Colleges that offer film programs. How good would you say Barnard’s is? I’m guessing because you guys have those glorious resources at Columbia, that they’re pretty fair. Am I right here?

Barnard is awesome. Best of both worlds… small LAC affiliated with large research university. It is the most selective of the sisters schools. Division 1 athletics & NYC! How could you not love this? Nice dorms also

How important is it, would you say, to have AP classes? Honestly, I am one of those students who didn’t realize just how competative the application process could be. For instance, I only took one AP class my Junior year. I have at least five honors classes though out my highschool career. Does my lack of AP’s taken on my Junior set me up as behind the game?

Barnard will be looking for students who have taken the most rigorous course load available to them. So, yes, I am afraid that if APs were available and you did not take them, that could lessen your chances of admission.

However, not applying absolutely eliminates your chances, obviously. So carefully consider how/if the lack of AP classes could be explained and compensated for in other areas such as extracurriculars or extenuating circumstances. It’s the total package and no one thing is likely to eliminate you completely from consideration. Well, unless you were a boy. :)

Meanderer – it kind of depends on what else you were doing. My daughter did NOT take the “most rigorous” curriculum available at her high school – she wanted to carve out time to do something else and that meant that she had to also deviate from a standard high school academic track. In her case the something else was to spend a semester abroad for a foreign exchange in junior year. However, I’d also note that in some cases where she had a choice, she chose the honors course over the AP after talking to the teachers, because she thought the honors class was a better fit for her. For example – she passed on AP English Composition in favor of Honors English (American lit) because she didn’t feel that she needed the intense focus on writing and grammar, and instead preferred a literature-focused class.

So my advice to you would be to make sure that your application focuses on your interest. If film or a related creative endeavor has been your passion… then make sure that comes through.

calmom, I can’t tell you how reassuring that makes me feel. During my sophmore and especially my junior years at highschool, I have been doing a lot of independent work on screenwriting and film work on my own time since our film program was pretty terrible till this last quarter. I was planning to make it clear that this time hadn’t been waisted by sending a final project that I’ll be shooting this summer. Next year I’m planning on taking five AP classes and do an independent study on AP Euro because I really like history classes. I am very interested in proving my dedication to this school, and since I want to be a film director, I would hope that my independent work would strenghten my application, rather than impede it.

I would suggest that you send an excerpt from your final project rather than the whole thing… unless the film itself is very short. My daughter wanted to share her dance choreography so she included a DVD, but edited things down to less than 3 minutes running time. (And clearly labeled the DVD so that anyone who saw it would know it was short).

I have no idea, of course, whether anyone actually looked at the DVD - but at least they didn’t shy away because they didn’t have the time. So think in terms of creating a preview --one or two of the best snippets, rather than the whole project.

hello Meanderer im glad you joined our thread! we’ve kind of died out because of APs but i want to continue this thread all the way through to next april during acceptance time!

so my teacher once again made us do a college project search& my interests have totally changed, i now want a small LAC in a urban setting and guess wat… Barnard was #1 is all of the college searchs!! All the other school lacked soemthing i wanted but Barnard had everything! Gosh i really want to do ED now, im becoming obsessed over the school :p

I’m not really sure what I want! I wanted to go to Brown for a REALLY long time but then on paper Barnard seems like the best fit out there. I have this weird emotional attachment to Brown though and I’m not really sure why other than the fact that I did a summer program there.

AHH I REALLY hope I can figure out my clear-cut first choice school and apply ED. Having the pressure off the rest of senior year would be super-awesome.
