Did anyone apply to the Science Pathways Program? If so, do you know when they tell us if we got in?
I was rejected and am pretty sad about it. Barnard was my dream school and I had been thinking about it for months. Does anyone feel the same?

rate rec letters: literally amazing. one from my ap lit teacher, one from my environmental science teacher, and one from my college counselor. all three knew me so well and have been writing recommendation essays for years so they were at least a 10/10
rate essays: i thought they were so good! i’ll explain more below but 10/10
common app:
why barnard: wrote about community mostly and how barnard refuses to limit its students. i had a bunch of great one-liners in there
bold Question: my favorite essay. i wrote about questions of sustainability. not just environmental sustainability, but intellectual and emotional as well. i wrote about how barnard fosters a community of sustainability in all three regards and wrote about how i would become involved with furthering this tradition
woman in history: rosalind franklin!
good luck to everyone deferred, and congrats to those accepted!

Did you apply for FA?: no
Rate Rec Letters: i didn’t read them but I chose teachers that I trusted. architecture teacher, physics teacher, english teacher, counselor, and boss/employer. I have really good relationships with all of them 10/10
Rate Essays: I am obsessed with my essays 10/10. I used a puzzle metaphor for my main essay, why barnard i mainly talked abt the community and curriculum, bold question i talked abt sexual assault being a one-sided topic and related it to statistics (my future major), woman in history i wrote about mary poppins
Any Comments?: i think my background may have helped, im hungarian and canadian, but i live in the us. i speak fluent hungarian at home.
I got in!!! Congrats everyone
i got in!
GPA (UW/W): (we only have weighted) 4.31 on a 4.33 scale
Rank (if you have): my school doesn’t rank students but it’s #1 private school in my state
SAT/ACT (superscore): didn’t take one
APs + Scores: (i didn’t send them in) apush 3, ap lang 3
ECs: honestly so much (near 20, but i combined them in common app) - i would say focus point was that i am leader for almost all of them and that they are related in focal point (service and diversity)
Did you apply for FA?: yes
Rate Rec Letters: (i didn’t read them but in order it is my college counselor, my math teacher, and my french teacher - i have outside connections/am close with all of them) 10/10, 8/10, 9/10
Essays:
common app: compared my passion for advocacy to how i wear my shoes (basically until i’ve trashed them and can feel the gravel). it was to demonstrate how i exhaust my resources and go above and beyond for progress and change
why barnard: took them through a day in my life at Barnard on a random Thursday in autumn. what helped was i included specific events like the pumpkin carving social that they had last year.
bold question: the universality of human rights (aka advocacy meets quantum physics). i mentioned how i already try to break this down with my long-distance friend using silly CIA documents and articles on JSTOR, but my intention to turn it into an independent research project on how we can successfully create and apply universal basic human rights
woman in history: i discussed Ore Lind, a queer Nigerian woman in this book I read called White is for Witching (great book by the way 10/10). i described our shared background but how i would question her on how she approached her personality since it was like perpendicular to mine
Any Comments?: my school definitely helped boost my application because they said they were going to trust more schools like mine bc of covid and uncertainty will rigor in certain school. i had only a few awards for French and one from the College Board/PSAT (African American scholar). my biggest tip is to manifest that acceptance like crazy (positive affirmations only!! no negativity, listen to songs you associate with your school on loop, etc.) my background: black middle-class student from the midwest.
hopefully this helps someone!! i am in no way intending to brag or sound cocky, so let me know if there’s anything i should clarify) and good luck to all of you still managing your applications
Im Nigerian too and got accepted!! Your woman in history essay sounds so interesting! I need to check out that book.
Got in!

Rate Rec Letters:
- Multivariable Calc professor: We work together on projects now, super nice and loved me as a student, only took him 1 semester though because it’s a dual enrollment course. We crack jokes over email every now and then too. 10/10
- French professor: I took her only for 1 semester as well but it was last semester so half was over zoom. She loved me cuz I helped out during class a ton. I cried reading the copy of the letter she sent me haha. 10/10
- I tried to get on the good side of my counselor…I feel like she doesn’t really like me but who knows. Hope she really said something good about me lol. 6/10
Rate Essays: My common app one wasn’t great, but I loved my supplements
Common App: Wrote about my love for card playing and how my definition of victory changed over time. The first essay I wrote so it was meh. Topic isn’t that unique either.
Why Barnard: Basically focused on the community. I’m a prospective math major so I think close knit communities are lacking in the field. I also mentioned specific courses I wanna take and emphasized the interdisciplinary part of the Foundations curriculum.
Bold Question: My bold(not bold at all tbh) question was why do teachers emphasize math as an “exact science” when approximations and estimations are incorporated into the curriculum. Then wrote about how the Barnard resources can help me in my applied math endeavors connecting the question with my major.
Woman in history: I wrote about Catherine Parr, the last queen/wife of king Henry VIII. She was definitely not a conventional Tudor Woman and I wanted to ask her for her views on modern feminism and dealing with a conservative patriarchal society as well as how religion shaped her perspective of the world. I worked on a translation project on Six the Musical which featured her so I have some personal connections to her.
More Comments: Didn’t do the interview bc they were all full before ED. Signed up for a couple of competitions but they got canceled due to Covid. Also never give up hope if you get a F in the class lol. I got one in sophomore year and retook it, got an A. Just try your best to see how you can mend it, and explain well in the additional comments. Didn’t have time to ask for additional comments either.
samee!
yeah, I got deferred. That’s practically a rejection for FGLI international students isn’t it? Worse part is I have 0 motivation to write any other uni applications.
from what I saw in reddit Barnard did not accept any international student asking for financial aid (might be totally wrong)… I was deferred as well
How many did they defer/rej/accept? I have a feeling they deferred a bunch of kids
