I already applied early action to University of San Diego and University of San Francisco. If I don’t get in, I’m also applying to University of Chicago, Northwestern, Boston College, Bard College, Sarah Lawrence, and potentially USC.

@college and medrix: They usually list Barnard as their education, but are apart of the Columbia network group. That is because there isn’t one for Barnard and I guess the student body agreed to just have a single Columbia one that encompasses Barnard as well.

Francesca, I seriously cannot focus on any of my assignments. I have a paper to write tonight and while it’s not huge, it’s substantial enough that the lack of focus is problematic.

As for jobs, I’ve done a few. I worked at a camp in the summer of my freshman year and I started working part time at Five Below in my junior year. I work there ~10 hours/week, although with the holiday season it might be more like 15-20 for the next couple of weeks.

As for volunteer work, I volunteer at MANNA (a meals-on-wheels soup kitchen for the terminally ill), Philadelphia Gay Bingo (a ridiculously fun bingo event in Philadelphia hosted by drag queens that donates money to the AIDS Foundation), New York Food Film Festival (shows films about food and then gives you the food that’s featured - proceeds go to the NYC Food Bank), Philadelphia AIDS Walk, and Walk Against Hate. I also interned in the CCTE Department at Columbia Teachers College but I’m not sure if that counts since it’s not community service.

It’s not very substantial but I do what I can with limited car availability!

As far as I know, the financial aid office only contacts you if you didn’t request aid (apparently they double-check) or forgot to send something in. If you didn’t get anything, it just means they have everything they need and it would make no sense for them to contact you - if you sent in all of your financial aid stuff, I think they can pretty safely assume that you’re applying for aid (unless, of course, you just really like to send people your tax returns).

Well, I can’t focus on it, but that has nothing to do with Barnard (frankly I’m too exhausted to worry at this point. The anxiety does occasionally surface in brief and painful spurts, but for the most part, I’m at peace with the whole situation). I can still focus when it’s interesting, though. This week I plan on spending some nice, relaxing evenings with Thomas Pynchon and Shakespeare.

Dear lord…amurd, you volunteer so much. I feel like a bad person.

Job wise, I did a community theatre show that I got paid for the summer before my junior year. I also worked one summer filing medical records at a local doctor’s office.

For volunteer work, I participate in this program that boxes food for the underpriviledged and hands it out once a month (kind of like a soup kitchen, but not really). Then, I also tutor underpriviledged children out of this woman’s garage once a week. And I’m in the Make-A-Wish club at school…

Yeah, not a major humanitarian…I really want to work at the local battered women’s shelter, but you have to be 18. We have to do a senior volunteer project at the end of the year, though, and I will be old enough then.

And, I am totally unable to focus on school work, as well. Which is more than a slight problem considering that I have finals this week and I’m currently drinking hot chocolate and watching Turner Classic Movies…but, Barnard isn’t really to blame as much as senioritis is.

so on average, were your commonapp activities lists more concentrated on volunteer work or academics?
mine was loaded more with academic speech/debate activities…

@treehugga. temple? dont mind me asking but are you buddhist? I think thats so cool!! I really admire buddhism.

@noloserhere: No I’m not buddhist hahaaa…jewish. And yeah, my commonapp activities were mostly sports, and academic stuff like language, speech, and science research

Noloserhere, temple is also a word that is used for a synagogue, so it’s quite possible that she’s Jewish. But if she’s a Buddhist that’s really cool as well!

And I tended to focus more on ECs, particularly in-school ones. I have leadership in seven in-school clubs and I do a lot of volunteer work. It sucks that there’s so little room for activities on the Common App extracurricular section - less than half of my stuff fit in the slots so I had to attach a resume for the extra writing document and I’m not sure if the ad coms even bothered looking at it. But other than National Merit Commended and AP Scholar I haven’t gotten any academic awards or recognitions because I’m mathematically inept.

I managed to finish the harder half of my essay…now I just have to gather a few quotes and I can’t be assed to do it. I also have a bunch of notes due for Gov on Wednesday or Thursday but my senior year philosophy has become “due tomorrow? Do tomorrow.”

@noloserhere: I assume she’s Jewish. We refer to synagogue as temple. And apparently 2 other people have answered that question but oh well.

As for your question about ECs, neither. All of my volunteer work has been an extension of my focus on political/social activism and the only explicitly academic activity I’ve done that I can think of is Model UN.

are any of you big on sports? I did cross country, track and indoor track all 4 years…and worked my ass off all four years, not giving me much time to do much more:( I’m the president of french club, part of green club, mercy care, and NHS…I’ve done other activities as well but none that were of great significance

Most of my extra curriculars focused on theatre. I do directing, acting, sound design, stage managing, and hair and makeup, so that took up a lot of space. Then, I put down my summer community theatre show, two volunteer things, painting, and journalism.

@mammamia: I’m probably the least sporty person ever, but that’s really cool! And I do really like cross country because all of my best guy friends are on the cross country team :)

By the way, is anyone else getting miffed about all the Ivy acceptances? SO many people I know are getting into Stanford, Georgetown, etc. and it’s frustrating me because most of them are so pretentious about it…

oh my god yes. this guy applied ed to georgetown and was expecting to hear back today(not sure if he did or not)…but he was going on and on about he knew he was going to get in, and that UVA was his back up school. UVA is extremely competitive, and is NOT easy to get into. If I get into Barnard, I will be beyond lucky…I’m not really expecting it at all, but then again I’m expecting the worst and hoping for the best

Colleges I have or will apply to: Tulane (accepted), McGill, Brandeis, Tufts, BU Honors College, U Michigan, U Miami, GWU, Haverford and then either American or Northeastern as safety’s (thoughts on which one anyone?)

Extra ciricukars - all over the place- research assistant for published author, 4 varsity years for 1 sport, tons of community service/school oriented leadership positions…anyone involved with student government, blood drives or invisible children?

New idea-how about everyone posts a quote they like or think would help ease/inspire all of us nervous recks

Also, forget who asked but I got an email and letter asking if I needed aid from Barnard financial aid

“What is success? To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; That is to have succeeded.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’m applying ED to Barnard and I’ve been tracking my application online. Some things (my ED agreement, one teacher rec, the school rec, and grade report) aren’t listed as being sent. common app lists them as being sent and downloaded by the college. I’ve called there a few times (including last week) just to check and make sure that was normal (especially since it’s getting so close to the notification deadline) and they assured me it was. BUT notification is this week, and those things are still blank on the tracker even though common app has that they’ve all been downloaded.

now here’s a good sign:
someone from admissions emailed me asking for my grade report, which I sent in and then checked on with her and she said she received it that morning and everything was fine. the grade report is one of the things not listed on my tracker, which now i KNOW they have because I talked with the admissions lady specifically about it.

they would contact me if something was missing right? they must have everything? maybe they just stopped posting tracker stuff? they MUST have it since common app lists everything as being signed, sent and downloaded by barnard. and the grade thing is a good sign

i’m calling in the morning, but i’m soo nervous now! is this happening to anyone else?! i need support just until i can call! c’mon girls!

@mammamia: Ugh, yes! I’m glad someone else feels the same way. For example, one girl at my school got into Stanford (and she’s really conceited, too…for example, she always says Boston College is her backup school, etc.) and it was literally all over Facebook all weekend. She got about 25 wallposts, no exaggeration, and posted so many statuses about it. And the worst part is that one of her really close friends got rejected. You just don’t rub it in someone’s face like that. And to make it worse, she’s without a doubt going to Stanford, but she’s still applying to all the other schools (which is like 20) that she was originally applying to for no purpose whatsoever. And a lot of the school’s she’s applying to are ones that her friends really want to go to, so it just doesn’t make sense to me that she’d apply and chance taking their spot when she has no intention of attending.

@neveragain12: Don’t worry, I had a really similar problem. I sent my ACT scores around mid-October and, until last Friday, they didn’t show up as being in on my portal. I called ACT and they said that they had been received, but Barnard just wasn’t updating the information. I emailed Barnard, but they just answered me today and updated my portal to say that they had been received last Friday. I wouldn’t fret - I am sure they have received anything. If the only thing they contacted you about was your school report, then they probably have everything else or else they would have mentioned that, as well. Best of luck!!

@sharbare: I was really involved in Invisible Children my freshman year, but, unfortunately, the club kind of fizzled out after that.

I like the quote game! Mine is: “Everything is okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”
