Barnard... Columbia

I agree, PF.

LadyA, my D had a similar feeling when she visited. Columbia was her #1 on paper but when visiting she felt it was very much an impersonal cog-in-the-machine kind of school for undergrad and wound up not even applying. Whereas, she saw a lot to like about Barnard.

Barnard's location is a plus. The programs that it offer is a plus plus. I don't mind if it's a 0-2% male ratio. To be honest, I want to go there for the stellar education it offers, cuz my philosophy is, career first, boys later. Fact is, I go to a hschool that seems to be 50f/50m, so I guess I don't see that getting a guy is that hard and yes, NYC, per se, is probably not much harder.
*shrug, sorry I was annoyed because i guess talking/reading about this subject is sorta depressing when you're still on the clueless end.

Someone mentioned co-ed dorms...Barnard has co-ed dorms? I'm not asking because I'm worried about "OMG NO BOYZZ!!1!!" or something -- I just didn't know that. And then again, I could have misunderstood so...anyone? Anyone?

I don't think Barnard itself has co-ed dorms...

Some Barnard girls live in the Columbia dorms which are co-ed..

approximately 6% of Barnard students live in coed dorms. Off campus there are some CU owned appartment buildings that house upper class Barnard students and columbia kids

Barnard has several potentially co-ed dorms, in a sense. Some off campus Barnard apartments also house non-students. Other dorms are open to both BC and CC students, as they like. Plimpton, for example, had a few all male suites when I lived there. I think in the 600's you can have men in your suites, too, but that won't happen by accident; you have to choose in a group with your male friends.

So you may be in a building with men in it, but you won't be in a suite with men (i.e. you won't have to share a bathroom with guys) unless you choose the guys you want to live with. And even then there has to be at least 50% Barnard students in your suite.

Oh, okay. Just wondering because I'd never heard anything like that mentioned before. :)

Having guys in suites doesn't happen too often, as far as I know. But it's still an option.

This sounds like an ideal solution for my D. Is this possible?

Very unlikely. While you can get permission to take Core classes, many of them are too full for even SEAS students, who need them to graduate. So getting permission for the more crowded classes is sometimes difficult. But the chance of getting permission to take every single Core class, and to have time to do both the Core and Barnard's requirements, is slim.

If she's interested in the material, she can just take a series of seminars.

Does anyone know if Barnard offers good financial aid packages?

Personally, Barnard gave me the best aid of any private school. But overall, I think they give average need-based packages. Mostly grants, a little over a thousand a year work-study, a few thousand in loans/year. Nothing amazing, but they won't screw you over.

I'm not entirely sure how Barnard's financial packages work at all, but if I'm a permanent resident will that count against me? Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how that works. Sorry. :(

for those people who got into barnard early decision, do they still have to send the fafsa?

If you want financial aid, yes.

Even if you don't want Financial Aid, fill it out, imho. There was a case a year or two back where someone's father died and their financial circumstances chaged radically. There was no FASFA on file at the college and they couldn't do anything because there was no file to amend...had to wait until the next year. It was a disaster, over and beyond the father's death.

I have a question for one of my friends who is wanting to go there. Do Barnard girls have access to A.) Columbia's fitness center, B.) Columbia's dorms, C.) Columbia's dining halls?

columbia dorms- no, columbia dining halls- yes, columbia gym- yes

Is it really expensive going to school lin NYC - I mean with all the temptations and distractions. How much more would you spend than you would, say, at Bryn Mawr or Amherst? How much would an average student spend in a month?

She sounds like the type of girl who used Barnard as a backdoor into CU.
