Barnard ED 2018

Hi everyone! I’m a senior from northern NJ and Barnard’s been my dream school ever since I helped my sister move in two years ago. I wish you all the best of luck and maybe I’ll see some of you at one of the open houses in October!

Hey guys, it’s been a while since someone posted and since it’s getting close to the deadline, I thought we might start talking about specifics? I’ll start:

cumulative GPA (past 3 years): 4.21 (weighted)
rank: 10th in my (very competitive) class of 151
freshman and sophomore years I had all As and A+'s, junior year I was out sick for a good 35-40ish days so I got all As except a B in one class
so far all As this year

all honors and APs when available (ex: there’s no honors available for geometry so I had just regular geometry freshman year)
-the only exception is I chose to take psychology instead of AP physics this year because I’m more interested in psych-related fields and I’m not a science person

Testing:

SATs: CR 730, M 740, W 750
I took them a second time last week so I’m hoping to improve those scores but I don’t know yet
chem: 740
math 2: 720

AP Chem: 4

EC’s:

Theater- actor in 5 plays over 5 years, stage crew for Grease as freshman, asst. stage manager for Chicago as sophomore, Stage Manager for Pippin last spring and Stage Manager for Thoroughly Modern Millie this year. I’ve also run the lightboard and sound systems for three community productions (Nine, Drowsy Chaperone, Pirates of Penzance).

Tennis-played since I was nine, varsity all through high school

I’m in two community service related clubs at school. One focuses on interacting with the community and raising money for local organizations. The other focuses on spreading peace and doing various local service projects just to help out.

I also volunteer with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. I was assigned to a Bhutanese family who lived in a Nepali refugee camp for 20 years before coming to VT last December. I visit them once a week (it’s an hour away or I would go more often) and stay for a few hours, helping out with their two year old daughter and helping them adjust to America.

*I don’t know if it counts as an EC or what, but I applied to, got in, and then attended the Governor’s Institute on Asian Cultures at UVM during the summer of 2012. It was a week spent on campus with kids from all over VT, learning all about Asia, and then this past summer (2013), we went to China for two weeks as a group.

Work:

I’m an intern at the local newspaper - I write various articles, usually related to my school because my “title” is officially (High School) Correspondent

I also work fairly regularly at the independent bookshop that my family has owned for 37 years.

Awards/Honors:

I got a gold (as a score) on the National Latin Exam last spring
I’ve won multiple school-level awards from teachers
I’m one of two seniors from my school who’s a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Senior Courseload:
AP European History
AP Calculus (AB)
AP English Lit and Comp
Latin III Honors
Latin IV Honors
French VI Honors
Psych

-excellent recommendations from 2 history teachers, a language teacher, and my theater director
-of course I can’t be sure, but I think my essay and supplements are pretty good, I’m a good writer
-also I don’t know if it matters, but I’m from a tiny rural town in Vermont, which is kind of unique?

The one thing that’s really freaking me out is the B last year. I tried my best but being sick and out of school so much made it really hard.

So what do you guys think about my chances? I’ll do the same for any of you.

broadwaybound: i think you have excellent chances! your scores are definitely in Barnard’s standards, now i think it is just up to how well you write your essay and supplements. My stats are much lower than yours but I have visited Barnard and had a really nice interview and will be applying ED, hoping that they’ll take me.
To be exact…
3.5 UW GPA… i usually get B+/A in all my classes but science I usually get B’s so they lower my grades. I have a very rigorous schedule, taking 6 APs this year and 10 in total.
ACT: 28. This is my biggest problem. I am retaking at the end of this month and will have to send them as soon as i receive them but I hope to get a 29 (or 30 but I doubt it)
I have a bunch of EC’s and a really good recommendation. I am working extremely hard on my supplements and essay. What do you think are my chances?

hi im new to this website…not really sure how it works? are we supposed to list credentials? anyway if someone could “chance me” that would be great
applying ED, i did interview on campus already
all honors courses all 4 years of high school, AP US and AP Spanish junior year, AP English, AP Latin and AP Statistics senior year
4s on both of my AP exams (at my school average AP Spanish score is a 2)
3.56 UW/4.12 W b/c of a bad grade in freshman geometry and science
recieved all A’s/A-'s in all english and foreign language classes
applying for proposed comparative literature major?? not sure if that does anything
ACT-31
ok extracurriculars:

Forensics Speech and Debate Team (NCFL) 11-12; I joined last year and was a state semi-finalist and regional alternate for nationals in varsity oral interpretation. I compete in Duo Interp, Humorous Interp, and of course, Oral Interpretation. I absolutely LOVE it.

Recommendations: from my junior year US History teacher who I adored and my theater director who I’ve known since I was 11, way back when in 6th grade. He’s also my current English teacher.

My math/science grades aren’t the strongest and I had some unfortunate B’s in math and science in junior year (pre-calc and physics to be exact). Freshmen and sophomore years I had B’s/B-'s in math only. I’ve taken all honors except for freshman biology, 8th grade earth science, and pre-calculus in 11th.

I hope my essay and supplements are unique! I’ve interviewed, went to a Seven Sisters event, took a campus tour and had an information session, and also will be meeting with a representative at my school later this month!

Thanks, all!

When we apply, do we get any confirmation email from Barnard or anything like that? :D

I got a confirmation email with a code to track my application. It came a few days after I sent in my common app though, not immediately.

hey mschm95! I’m from hong kong as well  I love Barnard so much that i flew over to NYC to visit the college + get an interview …

So excited and nervous!!!

Hi! I’m applying ED too and I was wondering if anyone knew when we will get our decisions- like what date. Thanks!

I think letters should come 12/15 the latest…last year people who were accepted got theirs 12/13 and 12/14 by priority mail. But NYC mail is kind of screwy sometimes–things get lost or stalled–but around 12/15 should be when we get notification!

are acceptances thick envelopes and rejections thin? or does anyone know if they’re all the same size?

@mollyco, acceptance letters come in thick packages with large black folders, and your financial aid decision. I assume then that Rejections/deferrals come in small envelopes.

don’t they come by email too though??

@collegebound4028: no, only for international students.

Since 12/15 is on a Sunday, do you guys think they’ll be received earlier?

also do people near New York get them earlier due to simple distance? does living in Vermont mean I’ll get my decision fairly quickly?

When I met with my admissions rep last month, she told me she thought they were going to send out emails this year (to everyone, not just international applicants). I don’t think this is confirmed though. Has anyone heard anything?

They said on their spring.me account that decisions will be sent both through mail and email.

Thanks 123lar! That’s great to hear as I’m out of town next week… Do you by any chance have a link to where they said that? Thanks again!
