Georgetown is more prestigious, since a lot of people haven't even heard of Barnard. I feel like I can relate more to the Barnard student population, and I might like the people I live with better over there than at Georgetown. That being said, I feel pretty much done with small schools. The gossip and everyone being in everyone else's business has gotten too suffocating for me. Barnard is also known as being more cliquey than Georgetown. It's in New York City though, the most amazing city on earth. My parents are prestige whores so they would pick Georgetown in a heartbeat, but I'm not so sure. What do you think?

When your parents are paying, Do you really have a choice?

Anyone who knows Georgetown will know Barnard. The people who don’t know Barnard, probably won’t even know of Georgetown. Prestige is relative.

I’d probably pick Barnard since you get the tight-knit community of strong women AND Columbia on your diploma. However, both are nice choices and I’m sure you’d do very very well at either.

laurazee, my D is having a similar dilema- Barnard or another co-ed college she likes. And I want to give you the same opinion: Don’t worry about Barnard being ‘cliquey’, since it’s in the middle of a big city and you will probably have different classes with different young ladies and breaks between your classes where you can walk in the streets of NYC. You won’t feel sofocated (as you would probably feel in highschool-when all of you are packed in the same classes the whole day) - Schedule in college is different and open - you will have the oppty during the second year of taking classes with Columbia students, and like
rainbowrose says, you will have “Columbia” in your diploma.
And liek0806 is right: prestige is relative. Barnard is one of the seven sisters- very prestigious among women college.
But Georgetown has its very good points as well. So, write on a paper what is more important for you: location? student body? attention from teachers?(which maybe different between Barnard and Georgetown), opportunity for internships (being in NYC vs DC?)
Your parents may go with what you want - since both institutions are quiet prestigious.
Best luck and congratulations!!
