If you are Barnard student from Manhattan (or other boroughs for that matter), are you guaranteed housing on campus?

Do you think adcoms question whether a student from here really wants to stay in New York for Barnard and if this would weigh negatively on admission decision?

Also, does being at Barnard and coming from the city seem too “familiar” and not different enough as a college experience?

I’m not a Barnard student but I don’t think your questions are necessarily Barnard specific

You’re guaranteed housing all 4 years.

No

College is a very different experience from high-school. Especially for first-years, just going to college is a much bigger part of your undergraduate experience than where your college happens to be. Also, familiarity is entirely subjective and you won’t know until you try.

I agree with Karon on all points! As to #3, I will also add…many of my friends are from NYC (including one of my best friends). While I won’t contest that there’s some value to moving elsewhere and experiencing different places, I dont think there’s anything wrong w/ sticking around, especially if the place you’re sticking around is a large and dynamic city where there’s always somthing new to explore. One of my good friends was worried about this, but she LOVES new york, and says living in Morningside Heights is an entirely different experience than living in her old neighborhood; she also plans to study abroad for a year.
