Hi,
So i’m trying to decide between Barnard and another school and i love barnard but I want to be a doctor. I’ve talked to many students who are pre-med and they all say that the pre med adviser is really bad and tries to convince everyone to take a few years and do a post bac despite having great stats for med school. I’ve also been looking at blogs of current seniors and those i’ve found are doing some sort of post-bac. Is it possible to go from barnard to med school? I’ve tried looking for med school admission stats on Barnard but i can’t seem to find any. I don’t want to do a post bac or work I want to go straight to med school after college. Is this remotely possible? Any advice or comments on pre-med at barnard?
Thanks!

I have served on the admission committee of a medical school, my answers are based on that experience. And on the experience of my daughter who took the premed classes at Barnard.
- The quality of medical education is pretty well standardized across the country, so for clinical training it doesn’t matter where you go to medical school. It also doesn’t affect your ability to get a residency. This is also related to the second set of tests one takes in Medical School. If you work hard in medical school and do well, you can compete for a residency just about anywhere. Medicine is not as credentials based as say Law.
- If on the other hand you want a career in research your choice of a medical school may be more important. I think your research mentor at Barnard will be more important than the premed advisors.
- The preparation in science for the MCAT is good.
If you like Barnard, I would go there. The decision on the Post-Bac would be based on your personal experience.
