What do you think of Barron's SAT writing workbook? (Please see link(s) below)

Do you think that it's helpful? Why or why not? It seems as if Barron's has two workbooks, so I'm linking to them both (though one is one more specific to the SAT).

I have the Barron’s SAT Writing workbook and its a decent book but it has loads of practice with the rules and you writing them but not much like the actual test. The practice tests are good and they help you notice stuff when you start taking practice tests. use the barron’s for practice and the blue book for the tests. I raised my Sat writing to the 600s due to this pair.

How are its questions different from those on the actual test? For example, are they harder?

Yeah I want some advice too… I’m not sure if i should get the Barron’s Writing workbook or Gruber’s…

same for critical reading…

byahnoob, does Gruber’s have a writing workbook?

It doesn’t matter that the questions are harder, only that they accurately reflect what is tested on the exam. I went through a Gruber’s review book (it was an SAT book, not a specific writing workbook) last year and the Writing section was very inaccurate in reflecting questions found on the SAT exam. They tested concepts in ways that the CB doesn’t test and in some cases concepts that aren’t even tested on the SAT. From what I hear Barron’s is not much better.

The SAT tests a very limited set of grammar rules and they test them in very consistent ways. My experience with the big test prep publishers is that they don’t put much effort into identifying and replicating exactly what the College Board is testing or how they test it.

Maybe you need a workbook like this to teach you the very basics (what is a comma splice, dangling modifier, etc), but dedicate most of your prep time to answering actual College Board questions if you want to maximize your score.

The main thing about the Barron’s writing workbook (in regards to essay, haven’t seen the MC portion yet) is that it assumes you don’t know how to write. It goes over main idea, topic sentence, blahblahblah stuff I learned in 4th grade blahblahblah and THEN gives a fairly good chapter on actual essays. I haven’t tried any of the essays out, but looking at how they structure their essays, it completely contravenes what is said in

in style, tone, examples, and structure.

any opinions?

Yes, definitely use that thread ^^^.

I used Barron’s writing workbook to go go from 660 or so to an 800. I liked the MC help that it gave and how thoroughly it went through everything. Sure it wasn’t spot on exactly what was tested, but I still thought that it was really good. The tests were fairly accurate, I felt.
