What are my chances to be admitted to any top tier US universities (Top 50 in the country) as a Canadian student with a, 3.7 equivalent unweighted GPA, 1170 SAT, 1000 volunteering hour, board of directors for a not for profit, 2 very good letters of recommendations?
Just a note, I have a 89% average in my top 6 grade 12 courses, and I am applying to either business, political science, or history. This is normally how Canadian Universities view grades, not sure how the US universities see them.
With an 1170 SAT score the Top 50 US schools are pretty much out of reach. American universities will look at your entire high school record grades 9-12. The “Top 6” is a Canadian thing and is irrelevant in the US. Also the few US schools that give need based aid to internationals are out of reach so you would be full pay at any US university.
You may want to look at schools that are test optional.
What about in the top 100?
As a Canadian why do you want to attend a US university, probably a second tier school at that, when you have so many options in Canada, that would cost far less?
Not with that average SAT score. You’ll be hard pressed for financial aid and to get in somewhere.
Plus, you will be paying $$40-$70k per year for most schools.
Canada has some great schools and prices, why not go there?
I agree with @TomSrOfBoston and @“aunt bea”. You are very likely to be full pay at US schools. Figure that one year in the US might cost about the same or a bit more than four years in Canada. Given your SAT you probably won’t be able to get into US schools that are as strong as the ones that you can get into in Canada.
US schools will look at your entire high school record from grades 9 through 12. As such telling us your “top 6” grades from grade 12 will not help us predict where you will get in. A 1170 SAT is low for anything in the top 50, and probably low for anything in the top 100 in the US.
Canadian companies prefer to hire from Canadian universities. US companies hire people who have the right to work in the US, which is probably not you. As such graduating from a university in the US can be awkward for a Canadian.
You might have a decent chance getting in somewhere such as the University of Massachusetts, Lowell (not the top campus in Amherst), or the University of New Hampshire. However, you will get into equally good or better universities in Canada, which will be much less expensive for you.
