Hello, I currently go to KSU in Georgia. I currently have a 2.4 gpa. But this semester I can bring it up to at least a 3.0. I want to go to school in Canada. As a transfer student will Canadian colleges be looking at my SAT and ACT scores or my current GPA? Also what are some good schools can I possibly attend? I am currently a Political Science major but I can possible change to something in the medical field. Do Canadian universities offer financial aid?
any help will be appreciated!
First of all how will you bring your GPA up from a 2.4 to 3.0.?
Some Canadian universities offer limited financial aid to Americans. With a 2.4 or even a 3.0 you may consider Bishop’s, Brock, Trent or Windsor but they may be a reach.
If you can pull your GPA up to 3.0 that would help you a lot. Anything significantly over 3.0 would open up quite a few very good possibilities. If you could manage significantly over a 3.0 for all of this upcoming year then you would have more schools to choose from after that.
I was also thinking of Windsor as a place for you to consider. I also expect that Bishop’s, Brock and Trent might be reaches, but all would be very good choices if you can get in. UNB (New Brunswick) or the University of Cape Breton Island or Brandon University also might be possibilities, although again you would have a far better chance if you can pull up your GPA.
My kids have dual citizenship and at Canadian university prices do not qualify for need-based aid. I can say that yes Canadian universities do have some merit aid for Canadian citizens, but probably not with your GPA. I don’t know whether they would have need or merit based aid for international (non-Canadian) students. However, prices in Canada are generally a lot lower than for US schools, particularly for schools other than the “big 3” (McGill, Toronto, and UBC).
