i tweeted bates admission asking if it was 8am or noon and they replied saying “The email will definitely be released by noon, but there’s no harm in checking earlier. ?” ahhhhh you guys we could really be getting our decisions in 8 hours! i’m getting so anxious
I’m applying ED2 to bates. Good luck everyone hopefully all of you will get in
Good morning everyone! Today is the day. Good luck to everyone!!
decisions are out. i got deferred. i had been feeling so confident and it wasn’t even supposed to be a reach for me, so this honestly hurts
@smallLAClover – Hang in there! This process is crazy and unpredictable! Send a continuing letter of interest, get another rec from a Bates alum, talk to your admissions officer, just show them how much you love Bates!
rejected… i thought I would at least get deferred. I’m so upset. but I’m wishing all of you good luck
Accepted… Wow, did not expect that.
My S was accepted and he couldn’t be happier. This entire athletic and academic DIII school process is very stressful but ended well. Best of luck to everyone.
@Dede1823 can you please share your stats? I really really want to go to bates but too nervous I’m not competitive enough
@poilons I’m glad you asked that. Listen, I first want to clarify that grades and scores are a small portion that makes up your acceptance into college. This is reflected in my acceptance. I have a UW GPA of 3.6 and a weighted of 3.8. I did not meet the standards of the ACT and SAT scores (I scored a 27 on my ACT). So overall, I made up most of what I lacked as a high school students with my ec’s and the essay.
@poilons - GPA W 3.8 (poor grades freshman year with incremental improvement each year), ACT 33, 5 AP classes (Computer Science A - 4, this year Calc AB, Physics C, Micro Econ and Macro Econ) - rest of core classes were H weighted. Also, my S was invited by the coach to visit Bates. He stayed overnight, meet the team, attended a course and interviewed on campus. The experience was paramount to my S decision to apply ED.
@poilons , you cannot compare yourself to a recruited athlete unless you too will have a coach’s support.
My daughter was deferred. She’s disappointed, at least partially because she loves the school and wanted to enjoy Christmas with an acceptance. I know she has the next round lined up. We’ll see.
Don’t be fooled by “recruited” athlete. You get no scholarship money, coaches are NOT the ones with the final say on admissions and can’t guarantee you a spot. While they can lend support, the impact can be very limited. DIII is much different than Di and all NESCAC schools have a stricter recruiting policy than other conferences.
^^ Recruited athletes at the NESCAC schools definitely need to be able to succeed academically. But most get pre-reads and are assured in advance of applying ED that they will be admitted. And there are definitely instances when the coach will relay that the AO has given the thumbs down to a recruit they liked.
But the stats they need to “clear the bar” so that the coach’s tip can work may not be what is being sought in another applicant who is going to need something else to make them stand out.
It’s not really apples to apples. It’s no different than looking at a Naviance scatter gram for any highly selective school - there are almost always a few acceptances that have lower stats than many of the rejections. These are kids that typically have compelling hooks.
It shows that you can get in with those stats but that they are not enough on their own.
@gardenstategal “it shows that you can get in with those stats but that they are not enough on their own”
I would suggest they MAY not or MAY be good enough on their own as we don’t know - just as my S essay and ECs were very strong as well.
@poilons - Stats shared and as you can see there are many facets to an incoming class. Definitely apply if you are interested and best of luck
I’ve been debating whether or not apply ed. I missed the deadline so I decided to apply ED II. Hopefully I’ll get in
@micdanny18 , don’t get me wrong. Plenty of the recruited athletes have great stats and put together very compelling apps. And they very well may have gotten in without their sport. But if they were recruited, they didn’t. That’s all I am saying. What got their apps out of the pile of those that cleared the initial read into the accepted pile was a coach’s tip.
I am not taking anything away from the recruited athletes that got in. Clearly, I hit a nerve, and that was not my intention.
Congrats to your kid. It’s no small feat to find a school you want to attend that also wants you on their team.
I got in!!!
ACT 34, Toefl 116.
I have no idea how to convert my gpa to The American way tho.
Really excited and happy rn!!!
My son was accepted!!
@poilons - SAT 1: 1410, SAT 2 US History: 770, GPA UW 3.7, W 4.0, took 5 APs (US History, Euro, World History, Bio, & Lit). Congrats to all accepted and if deferred, continue to show interest and reach out to your admissions rep, visit, or interview.
