Bates Housing Model

Hey,

I’ve heard that Bates has some form of a residential college system (similar to Yale’s). Can someone explain in detail what this system entails to me, please? What are its advantages and disadvantages? Does it seem to be working well or poorly? I heard that one of the goals of such models is to build college community and increase inter-class interaction. Has the res-college model done this?

I would, of course, be more curious to hear what current students have to say, but I’d appreciate any feedback on this aspect of Bates life from anyone who has knowledge about the school.

Thanks!

I'm the parent of a Bates student. There isn't a Yale system there. However, the small size of the school means that students know each other. It is a friendly place, and I get glowing reports about it. Our child was in chem free housing freshman year, not because of any moral or religious prompting on our part but because it would be a quieter place to live (which was true) and was a nice dorm.

We couldn't be more pleased with the experience at Bates.
