I was looking at the visit reports feature, and a few students described the Bates interview as “more intense” than at other colleges - more like a “grilling” and that the interviewer liked to put them “on the spot.” Nevertheless, they said they enjoyed the interviews.

Has that been the experience of most people? Any specific lines of quesstioning that were particularly unexpected or more intense?

I think I have a good idea about what college interviews are like, and I’m having a little trouble imagining with any specificity what would be different about a Bates interview. Help me out if you can!

My D interviewed at Bates last year and she said that it just seemed like a nice talk. Nothing intense. She got a long with the person who interviewed her but then he is a runner and a science professor there and she is a runner and will be attending there this year as a science major. Guess it just worked out for her as they had so much in common. She thought it went well and since she was accepted it must have.

The interviews aren’t intense at all. It’s actually rather nice, all the interviewers are really nice and friendly. It might seem a little daunting, since Bates does rely a lot on interviews, but the interview really isn’t bad. I promise! Good luck!

I go to Bates but actually didn’t have an interview (I am in the minority in that regard), but I haven’t heard anything bad about the interviews. But by all accounts they mean a lot to Bates admission, so don’t be too relaxed about them.

My Bates interview was very easygoing, not at all unlike the interview at many other small liberal arts colleges.
