Bates vs Middlebury. EDII? IB?

Hey there,

Bates or Middlebury? I’m currently undecided about what college to choose as my top 1 in order to apply EDII. I’m an IB student and my predicted grade is not that amazing. I have a 35 and I don’t know if I should use EDII for Midd or for Bates, since I’ve seen that it’s probably more likely for me to get into Bates than Middlebury. I would love if someone can guide me on how the theater and media majors looks in each school and also to realistically tell me where I would have an option of making it in.

Best,

You should only apply ED at schools you’re 100% sure you want to attend.

If you have a certain top choice use the EDII for that school (assuming you have no need to compare financial offers). Otherwise apply RD.

You can look up theater and related activities on the colleges’ web sites. You really need to know what colleges hold for you, not just that they have EDII. This is part of assessing your match.

Another handy tool is the Dept. of Ed’s college navigator site: http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/. Enter in the college name and then click on programs/majors and you can see how many kids graduated with a major in each discipline last year (and compare to total number of graduates). Middlebury looks like, in a addition to a handful of theater majors, they had a bunch of folks major in Film/Cinema/Video Studies, where I see no equivalent category for Bates. Not sure if that’s what you meant by “media” or not. Neither of them appear to have anything resembling a communications major, if that’s what you were after.

When my daughter looked closely at Middlebury, we were pretty impressed by how much student-run theater was happening. Not sure about Bates. Googling “student theater ” might yield some info on that bit.

What is the percentile for your IB grade?
