Out of the USNEWS top eight publics. List the school you would want to go to from first to last, (one list for undergrad and one list for graduate). Disregard Out-of-State and In-state tuition. I would like to see why you would like to go to school X over school Y.

University of CaliforniaBerkeley
University of Virginia
University of CaliforniaLos Angeles
University of MichiganAnn Arbor
University of North CarolinaChapel Hill
College of William and Mary (VA)
Univ. of CaliforniaSan Diego
Univ. of WisconsinMadison

UVA
UNC - CH
W&M
U Mich
UC - Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
U Wisconsin

It's mostly a cross between academics and distance from home so all the UC's drop to the bottom and Wisconsin I just never cared for personally.

University of Virginia

University of Michigan

University of Wisconsin
GAP

University of North Carolina

College of William and Mary
GAP

Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD

WHY?
1. Location, location, location.
2. Virginia and Michigan have great recruiting by investment banks and are sort of "feeder schools" to Wall Street.
3. The 6 of them have finance; the other two do not.
4. I kind of don't care about cost. But if I got into Virginia, I'd LOVE to go. The McIntire School of Commerce is top notch.

I'd be surprised if the IBank recruiting from U Va or U Mich were very different from UC Berkeley or to a slightly lesser extent UCLA, perhaps even UW, but I could be wrong. Any proof of any kind? UCLA has business economics, and I think Haas allows you to specialize in finance, but I could be wrong. Which 6 are "the 6," futurenyustudent?

The order to which i personally would attend all things being included (academics, location, ect.):

UCLA

UCSD

UC Berkeley

Michigan

Virginia

Wisconsin

William and Mary

UNC

-------Can't really go wrong with any of these schools, as they are the top 8 publics in the country. Its hard to beat the academics and location of sd, la and berkeley, although i have heard very good things about unc and wisonsin's locations. and of course the prestige of u of virginia is second only to berkeley in regards to public universities.

UCB (Cal English. Nuff Said ;) )

UVA (awesome choice)

University of CaliforniaLos Angeles (not really down with the socal thing)

UCSD

UNC Chapel Hill (I'd prefer to go to North Carolina for Duke though :) )

Not really familiar with the programs of the rest  (That is not meant to be a diss. I still know they are great schools)

I'd pick W&M too. It's one apple and seven oranges. One medium-sized, personal, private-feeling campus and seven more anonymous mega-universities.

Don't like UC's either- too big and the idea of the west coast just doesn't appeal to me. UVA seems a bit stuffy and too southern, otherwise it would rank higher. As long as we're talking undergrad, Wisconsin seems a little overrated in this thread. I would definitely put UNC ahead of it for UG.

For grad school,
1) UNC Chapel Hill- I'm an NC resident and Duke student, and it's a school I grew up to love. Great marine science program for grad school. Beautiful campus and great resources. The top public for undergrad, in my opinion.
2) Michigan- Strong programs in pretty much everything, especially my areas of interest. Strong school sprit and a cold climate.
3) UCSD- The BEST marine science program (Scripps) in the nation.
4) Wisconsin- Similar to Michigan above.
5) UC Berkeley
6) UCLA

Cal (amazing in philosophy and english and I like the bay area)
UVA (loren lomasky is a professor there. strong philosophy program in general. Strong english program as well.)
William and Mary (generally strong in english and philosophy)
UCLA
Wisconsin
Michigan
UNC
UCSD (I don't think they offer my majors)

I hate UCs too! We should be friends.

I'm too "cool" for UCs.
[/quote]

What's with all the hate on UCs? I get it if you don't like the location, but come on they are all top notch public universities. Too big? UCSD has around 20,000 undergrads, UCB has about 23,000, and UCLA has about 24,000, compared with Michigan which has about 25,000 and Wisconsin which has about 28,000.

I think some people are just favoring whichever public university is closest to where they live.

Anyway, my list:

Undergrad

Berkeley
UVa
UCLA
U Mich
UCSD
UNC
W&M
Wisconsin

Grad

Berkeley
Michigan
UVa
UCLA
Don't know about the rest.
