I always got the vibe that Michigan is very liberal and social-economically heterogeneous from my friends who attend there (they told me the greek scene wasnt that big on campus). Guess I was wrong. Thanks for pointing that out. I never bragged about attending school with old money value, I was trying to point that out so prospective students know what the vibe is. (at the time when I had misconception about Michigan).

exact opposite on all counts, with the exception of liberal. It is fairly liberal.

the greek system is big... and very elitist. i'd say at least 85% of the attractive students in the population are a part of the greek system (or will be)... this is not an exaggeration.

and in my experience, a definite majority of students come from affluent households.

"the greek system is big... and very elitist. i'd say at least 85% of the attractive students in the population are a part of the greek system (or will be)... this is not an exaggeration."

learned a few things! :)

Haha...not this argument again.

"umm wheres Maryland College Park.....we all know its amopng the top public ivies."

Do we really though? I'm not so sure. Great school but still well behind the likes of UIUC and UT.

Abemartin, Maryland is a great public university, but is it one of the top 10 publics? Which if those 10 universities would you remove in favor of Maryland for undergraduate education?

College of William and Mary
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of California-San Diego
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Texas-Austin
University of Virginia
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin-Madison

If we are to include Maryland, we must also include schools like UC-Davis, UC-Irvine, UC-Santa Barbara, Minnesota, Penn State, Purdue and some others.

Yeah, in an overall sense, UMCP falls short of Top 10 Publich school list.
However, for CS/Eng. (graduate), UMCP is definitely on the top 10 list- Great place to get your PhD in any engineering major/cs!!!

Nice to see people are talking intelligently and not attacking each other's opinions.

Oh! I'd forgotten about this the last time I posted, but here's the general impression of Alexandre's list overseas, around my area anyways.

Publics suck. Because they're publics. --> Retarded I know, but we're heavily into name brand schools here. But if we were to get into the publics.. in order of best to worst.

UC Berkeley
UCLA
UIUC
UCSD
U Michigan - Ann Arbor

The others aren't even on here because we've never heard of them here. If you guys think people applying to HYPS have the prestige thing bad, it's worse overseas. As my South Korean friend tells me, recruiters will only look at someone from U of Washington, as it's known as THE top school in South Korea.

Alexandre: I'm sorry! I hadn't realized you were a he! ><"

Melli, that's ok, my name is latin in origin...many Anglophiles, fellow Arabs and Asians make the same mistake.

As for recognition of publics, in most of the world, I'd say that Cal is the best known, followed by UCLA, Michigan and UTA in no particular order.

Cal
Uva
Uw
Unc
Ucla
Um
Ucsd
W&m

Oh, c'mon, everyone knows public school kids can't actually speak intelligently about anything.

Hey cool, DRab almost has 5,000 posts.

Man I still remember when you were about to post your 4,000 post but you wanted to save it for something good. That was only a few months ago!

Don't remind me.

Someday I'll catch up to DRab...

In no particular order:

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Virginia
University of Florida
University of Wisconsin-Madison
William and Mary
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of California-San Diego
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

As if you're far behind, flopsy.

that's a very solid list sobick.
i would consider adding the university of texas at austin too.
i did a postdoctoral fellowship there, and they have it all.

My list:

University of California - Berkeley
University of California - Los Angeles
University of California - San Diego
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
University of Virginia
College of William and Mary
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Umm...I prefer California. But that's mostly because I want to be surrounded with more Asians. Where I live...there's none. :( Also prestige somewhat plays a role...I'm not very interested in any of those schools in my college search however. ^^;

if you literally want to be surrounded by asians then check out university of california at irvine, where they are overwhelmingly the majority. and they are in the plurality at many other places from berkeley in the north to cal poly pomona in the south.

It's Cali, what can I say? =)
