Waco is very affordable.
I was confounded to find out that I was deferred. I have a 2250 (1510) SAT and a 4.42 GPA (4.00 unweighted) in the most rigorous courses along with a laundry list of extracurricular activities. I am also a National Merit Semifinalist and will likely become a Finalist when those decisions are released. Baylor offers full tuition scholarships to National Merit Finalists in order to attract these students, yet I was deferred. If anyone has any explanation for this happening, please let me know.
That makes no sense. Baylor accepts 57% of applicants. I can’t imagine why they would defer you with those academic achievements. My son has similar stats: NMSF, 4.0 UW, ACT 35, slightly lower SAT (2200), rigorous courses. He was accepted. He was also invited to invitation to excellence and the medical interview day.
@hwolwo132, that is really strange. Have you tried contacting admissions to ask about it?
@hwolwo132 Same thing happened to me. Got deferred 35 ACT 2290 SAT 3.8/4.0 GPA 10+ AP Classes AP Scholar with distinction etc, etc. I don’t really care because I’ve already been accepted UT McCombs BHP and UMich. But I think they defer because they know these people are using them as a safety school and that 99% chance we won’t go there, but if we write a letter to the admissions office explaining our interest or whatnot they will most likely accept us. Just my 2 cents.
My daughter also got Deferred. 34 ACT, 4.4 GPA, NMSF, multiple AP classes. We assumed it was because she didn’t complete all of the recommended items in the application.
@ey1001, did you complete all the items in the application? How early did you apply? I think @Dune216 may have a point that skipping recommended items in the application could cause a problem; perhaps indicate a lack of strong interest. I think your idea of writing a letter to admissions is a good one.
My daughter has similar stats to yours, with a little higher SAT and GPA and NMSF, and she was accepted. But she also did all the optional items on the application, applied to Invitation to Excellence, and applied really early.
That is strange that you were deferred, I have no idea why. I applied without doing any of the optional items, had lower stats than @ey1001 (30 ACT, 4.27 GPA, Multiple AP’s), and got the President’s Gold Scholarship + I was selected to be a Baylor Distinguished Scholar (Business school) which after writing an essay added another 3,000$ per year.
I was also accepted a few weeks ago! 32 ACT, 4.0 GPA, 5 AP’s.
@hwolwo132 @Dune216 @ey1001 I think a lot of people got automatically deferred. My daughter submitted her application the day before the early action deadline but did not apply for early action. Within 24 hours, her application was put in “deferred” status and her application status had the standard blurb about them receiving a record amount of early action applications etc. It was weird because she hadn’t submitted for early action and hadn’t even uploaded the optional items at that point. I wouldn’t worry about the “deferred” status, I think that every application that they received during a certain time frame automatically went into “deferred” status and will be evaluated for regular admission.
Baylor is on an upward swing since Kenneth Starr and Art Briles moved in, their acceptance rate is going lower every year because student interest is very high thanks to successful academic and athletic programs. Waco is undergoing a transformation as well.
They do have some holistic philosophy, every year they reject a good percentage of high achievers. They have a healthy donor base and a hefty endowment, they can do whatever works for their vision of their student body. It’s not a public school where you have to auto-admit.
I was just accepted

Daughter was accepted to Baylor this week, after being deferred in January. Also found out this month she is a NMF, so she will receive the Regents’ Gold Scholarship.
CONGRATS!!!
Did anyone else get the email from the Baylor Bear foundation? We got one about reserving football tickets and congratulating my daughter on her acceptance but we haven’t received an acceptance via email or the gobaylor website!
Never mind…:they sent an apology email! Oops.
I read that e-mail this way. If you got that e-mail, your kid has been accepted. But Baylor Admissions was very upset that they sent that out before they had the chance to update the admissions portal to reflect the admissions decision. Because that e-mail is sure to generate tons of calls to Baylor Admissions. The booster club was supposed to wait until X date, or the go from Baylor Admissions and jumped the gun. So I’d go with that is an acceptance.
@collegemama987 My daughter and I both received this email. She was accepted some time back. Looks like you have been accepted.
@Sophmore1 Do you think so? I got the same email, but my goBaylor hasn’t updated or anything; I wonder when they’ll update for all RD…it’s rolling admissions right?
