BB Grammar question page 603 #25

The exchange between the teacher and the student (promotes) learning (far different)from that which results (as) the student listens (but does not) participate.

I thought “far different” should have been changed to “far differently.” But the answer is “as” and I’m not sure why. Does it need to be replaced with “when” or something?

I don't really know why, but when you read it to yourself out loud, the "as" part sounds wrong.

I'd agree. As should be when.

^ yep, that's what I'd say

Thanks :) And can anyone explain to me why different shouldn't be differently? Just so I won't get confused next time.

because even if you change it to differently the sentence isn't grammatically correct.

I think you're assuming that "far different" is meant to modify "promotes," in which case you would be correct and it would be an adverb, "far differently." However, in the question, "far different" modifies "learning," a noun, so it has to be an adjective, or "far different." The only way you can realize this is when you see that "as" is incorrect; I believe it should be "when."
