BB Pg 603 #25

This sentence error question was relatively medium in difficulty. I got the correct answer but I don't really know why it's the correct answer. (Get what I mean? lol).

The exchange between the teacher and the student promotes learning far different from that which results as the student listens but does not participate.

(a) promotes
(b) far different
b as/b but does not
(e) No error

I bolded the correct answer. That is the answer that I got but I just don't know exactly why it needs to be changed. I'm pretty sure it needs to be changed to "if."
Can anyone explain why? Thanks.

…never mind

You are correct because it should be “if” because the sentence refers to the aforementioned student. “If” correctly implies a hypothetical and not an event.

You wouldn’t say “the student does his homework” and then say “as the student does not do his homework.” You would say “if…”
