BB Math Question 15 pg 859

The figure above is a right triangle. What is the value of 49+x^2

(basically, it's a right triangle with two legs, values 7+x and 7-x. And also with a hypotenuse of 10)

A) 50
B) 51
C) 72
D) 98
E) 100

Ok so your going to use the pythagorean thereom.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2, (7+X)^2 + (7-X)^2 = 10^2

done out it looks like:
49 + 14X + X^2 + 49 - 14X + X^2 = 100

the 14X cancels out leaving:
49 + 49 + X^2 + X^2 = 100

so you can see that is the same as:
2(49 + X^2) = 100

divide by 2
49 + X^2 = 50 or choice A
