My son is accepted by BB&N and Noble, entering 9th grade. I'm very interested to learn people's takes on these two schools. Thanks for responding.

they are both great schools. nice job for your son

I am BB&N Parent—I would be happy to answer questions for you about the school
I have one current student and one grad of BB&N who is now a Junior in college

MomOfAKnight, Would you kindly post what you think are the strengths and not so strong points of BB&N? What is the faculty like: excellent, helpful? How are students’ social interactions? preppy? What about math and science, arts, and sports? I would appreciate it if you can give us an objective picture. If there is one thing that need to be improved now, what would it be?

MomOfAKnight, I’ve heard BB&N is very acdemically focused, to what end? more course requirements and longer homework hours? I also noticed there are literally no kids from either school went on to top engineering schools, are science and math not top priorities at these schools? What your children say about BB&N, things they like, and things they wish could be a lilttle different? Thanks.

Just have a minute or 2 but I will bullet a few strengths of BB&N and a stream of thoughts…
-Strengths
Nice choice of languages including the usual suspects and Chinese, Arabic, Russian
Excellent English department, these kids come out well prepared for college in terms of writing
Not preppy, decent diversity–racial, ethinic, socio-economic
Consistency with advisor system
Excellent personalized colllege counseling
Sports are important but ok if your kid is not a superjock

Academics are tough, lots of papers, really emphasize critical thinking
Can be very stressful but teachers are supportive and flexible…still a pressure cooker at times

Sons loved many of their teachers who took a personal interest in them. Maybe only one teacher that we had issues with other the years. Sophomore debates were fun, senior project encourages independence and free thinking. Not easy to get As but colleges know that. Have been told that kids with GPAs as low as 3.3 are strong Ivy candidates coming from BB&N. Coaches will advocate for your kid at the college level as well and really help with the recruitment process

To bill10, I know of many of my son’s friends who are engineering/science types (mine kids are not)–one is at Vanderbilt, one at Tufts and a couple at MIT

MomOfAKnight, Thanks for the info. Very helpful. Have you looked at other local day schools like Nobles and Milton before you selected BB&N?

Those schools are quite different, and also far apart. So, one thing I’d consider is commute time. There aren’t enough hours in a day for a high school kid to do what needs doing, extra time in a car won’t help…

Our sons considered and were admitted to a number of schools in the Boston/Eastern Mass area…some boarding, some not. Ultimately they both decided on BB&N–close to home, good academics and frankly from our end, the best financial aid package bar none when we compared offers.
We strongly considered Milton for one son who was admitted and loved the school but he did not want to board and the commute was a deal breaker. Nobles we did not consider --not a good fit for our boys

MomOfAKnight, Thanks.
