The number of awards given this year to biochemists accentuate the significant gains being made in the study of the chemistry of living organisms. No error.

The answer is B, but I chose E. I still don't get it, because I thought accentuate meant highlighting something.

For writing, don't really worry about definitions(except for diction errors where you could see something like EFFECT instead of AFFECT). Subject Verb Agreement is the #1 most important rule to know on SAT writing. See how each term relates to a subject. If it's a verb, make sure that it relates to a subject(find out which one it relates to). Cross out prepositional phrases to make the sentence easier. If you took out OF AWARDS, TO BIOCHEMISTS, and other phrases, it would just read, "The number given this year accentuate the significant gains being made." Now something sounds wrong, right? You don't say the number accentuate, you say the number ACCENTUATE*S*.
