BB Writing Question

pg. 781 #9

(Because economic hardship is the real source of many
other problems is the reason why) the revolutionary
government attacked inflation first.

A. ...
B. Because economic hardship is the real source of
many other problems,
C. Economic hardship causes many other problems
and is the reason for why
D. As a result of economic hardship causing many
other problems,
E. The fact that economic hardship is the real source
of many other problems is why

I can see why B is the correct answer but D looks just as good to me. What is wrong with D?

i think the comma at the end of d isn't necessary and maybe wrong

In general, active verbs are better than gerunds/participles/passive voice. The participle in D makes it unnecessarily wordy and slightly awkward.
