Questions for Some Really Weird Sentence Revision Problems

Bold = Correct Answer

Because economic hardship is the real source of many other problems is the reason why the revolutionary government attacked inflation first.

(A) Because economic hardship is the real source of many other problems is the reason why
b Because economic hardship is the real source of many other problems,/b Economic hardship causes many other problems and is the reason why
(D) As a result of economic hardship causing many other problems,
(E) The fact that ecopnomic hardship is the real source of many other problems is why

I chose D.

In Germany, foresters discovered that trees killed by acid rain had begun to die four years earlier, even though the trees had shown no signs of disease then.

b earlier, even though the trees had shown no signs of disease then/b earlier, but not showing any signs of disease then
(C) earlier, no outward signs of disease had been shown in the trees, however
(D) earlier without any signs of disease shown then
(E) earlier, not then having shown any signs of disease, however

I chose D.

In the wild, pygmy chimpanzees are found only in an inaccessible region south of the Zaire River, since such is the ease, very few are in captivity.

(A) since such is the case, very few are in captivity
(B) and very few are in captivity because of that
(C) no more than a few are in captivity as a result
(D) the number in captivity is very few for this reason
b and so no more than a few are in captivity**

I chose B.

i think for these you just have to choose the best possible answer, even though some might work.

for 9, D is redundant (or something along those lines) because “as a result of economic hardship” is the same thing as “economic hardship causing”. in general, answer B sounds better than D

for 10, remember to choose the answer that is in active tense, rather than passive (unless the only right answer is passive). A is best because of active tense: the trees had not shown disease, rather than in D, where the disease was shown (by the trees)

for 11, B seems like a good choice, but it kind of lacks the “cause-effect” connection between the two main parts of the sentence. E has this: “so” relates why so few are in captivity. While B might have “because of that”, the phrase isn’t constructed as nicely

The first question threw me off too. Can somebody explain the logic behind the content (not grammar)?

For 9, if you were adamant about ditching “source” and putting emphasis on the verb, a much better sentence than D would be: “Because economic hardship causes many other problems…”

B is as correct grammatically as this revised D sentence and there are no extremely obvious ways of rephrasing the sentence in a more concise manner.

yes, but D is redundant as spellandcolor said “result…cause,” so B is a better answer as A and E are obviously wrong and C is wrong for the same reason. In CR, SAT likes simplified as well as correct answers.

To random, I believe the sentence is saying that the government chose to work on inflation because economic hardships resulting from inflation caused a multitude of other problems; thus, they were attempting to work from the source instead of a result of the source. **Sorry if I explained something you already knew because I misinterpreted your question. :/
