BB Writing Question

BB Pg. 166 #5

Early American factories did not so much replace household manufacturing but complement it.

(A) but complement
(B) as complement
(C) but they complemented
(D) and they complemented
(E) as they were to complement

I chose choice (A). Can someone explain to me why it is choice (B)?

I searched earlier threads, but they weren't clear.

The proper form is “so much… as”; memorize this.

Silver are there other forms like that to memorize?
I know of if…were…would…
Any others I need to know?

Yes, there are quite a few. I can’t think clearly enough right now to compile them off the top of my head. You’ll find, in a not-so-concise way though, most of the tough ones here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/782128-post-writing-questions-here.html.

^^ joeblogsfails or silverturtle,

can you please give me a particular example of the “if…were…would”?

Thanks for the help and referring me to the other thread. If so one could make a neat, organized thread I think it would be beneficial to those who struggle with the W Section

“can you please give me a particular example of the ‘if…were…would’?”

It’s not really a special idiom or anything; it’s merely a verb tense (unreal future conditional, to be exact).

The “were” is often omitted in speech, but it is neccesary anytime one is speaking about a hypothetical situation in the future contigent on something (i.e., has a dependent clause with “if”):

If I were to become a pilot, I would have fun.

If he were to send me the email, I would thank him.
