BC vs. NYU (Arts and Sciences). Your opinions please!

Hi everyone. I’m new to this forum and I just wanted to get some opinions about NYU and Boston College which are the two schools I’m debating between going to. I was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences for a Biology major in both schools. For NYU, I was offered $7,500 a year as well as the Presidential Scholars Program (which I’m not that familiar about). BC did not offer me any of these things.

First of all, when I visited the BC campus I thought it was so beautiful and there were people all over the lawns relaxing and hanging out. I thought that this was the picture of college I had in my mind. After speaking to a current student, I learned that the campus was not always so busy and half the time in the winter it is practically dead. So what exactly is the BC environment like throughout the year?

The one problem I have with NYU is its lack of a college campus. Sometimes I feel that New York City is very intimidating. NYU also lacks a big sports program which doesn’t really bother me too much, but I would like places to toss a football or frisbee with friends and attend occasional sports games. The thing I like about NYU is that I feel that it has a stronger biology department.

If you guys could give me any input with pros and cons of BC and NYU that would be greatly appreciated! Any thoughts on which school actually offers a better biology program would be great too.

I had the same choice to make as you: CAS at BC or NYU with a major in biology. I chose BC for a few reasons:

1) The BC campus is beautiful while NYU lacks a campus.

2) New York City itself can be a bit intimidating and I'd rather embrance my environment rather than be intimidated by it.

3) I like the people at BC more- personally I think that the people at NYU are a bit too artsy (generally speaking).

4) The drug scene at NYU is ridiculous

5) Both have solid biology programs- both are well-known and stellar

6) Many have complained of the social life at NYU- many find it difficult to make friends because of its size.

7) Personally, I prefer Boston over NYC.

For me, both financial aid packages were similar (BC gave me a bit more but nothing major).

NYU had always been my dream school, but after getting into BC last year i didnt even apply. im not too familiar with the strength of the bio departments compared to eachother but i know BC has a strong premed program.

you would have to assume that BCs campus is dead half the year because its just too cold to stay outside between november and march. but that doesnt stop the social life. people still go out, there are still parties, sports continue and you only reaslly notice it on the walk to class. it gets really cold in nyc in the winter too, you wont see people lounging in the park between nov and march there either.

im a huge sports fan so the lack of them at NYU definetly bothered me. there is NO school spirit at NYU. i have 3 close friends say their thought is that htye live in nyc, just happen to go to school at nyu

it takes a special kind of person to love NYU. the city IS your life, theres no escape. ny is my favorite city in the world but i wanted something different for college because im from that area and probably going to move back after college. you have to understand that your social life will mainly consist of bars/clubs or the occational dorm party.

the $7,500 is nice, but not TOO much of a difference to make BC a rediculous choice. if its okay with you and your parents, then it sounds like you want to go to BC more anyway. you really have to think hard about whether you want a more traditional college experience or if you want to live and breathe NYC
