Be aware of racism in north america

tell me why you can’t bracket america with germany?!

why cant we bracket america with other countries? we are talking about racism here, and no country is completely void of racism.

The only country I would bracket the US with is the UK and India
They are the only major countries where minorities have become as much a part of the mainstream life as everyone else.

german123 ; How many people of color are leaders of your countries political, business and academic realms???
sorry i mean no offense, im just stating a point

Percent of blacks in US population: 12.4%
Percent of blacks in US Congress: 8%

Percent of Hispanics in US population: 14.8%
Percent of Hispanics in US Congress: 5%

Percent of women in US population: 50.8%
Percent of women in US Congress: 16.6%

Given this, I might bracket the US along with South Africa in terms of racial progress.

^^agreed. South Africa has come a really long way on that front

“german123 ; How many people of color are leaders of your countries political, business and academic realms???

since the percentage of colored people (haven’T looked it up but i’m pretty sure that my feeling is correct) is way lower in germany than in america it is not a suprise that the percentage of colored people in high political/business/academic positions

Eactly, the percentage of of colored people is way lower in Germany, thus it is more likely that people of color would be uncomfortable and more likely to be subject to racism.

One caveat here before I post my opinion:

Not meant to offend your feelings or show disrespect to your country.

Due to whatever historical reasons, Europe is inward looking and Germany, although the largest economy of Europe, is a society not inclined towards multi-culturalism.

When I say US stands on a separate footing, I mean:

It is a nation of immigrants (and the early immigrants did not shut the doors on later immigrants) and is likely to be a ‘rainbow’ nation in the true sense of the word in the coming decades.

As regards racism, it has stringent institutional framework in place.

Finally, it is said that all immigrants have that something-‘fire in the belly’- that makes the society dynamic, vibrant and a melting pot. Even today,Europe cannot match the GDP growth rate of US.

if i wanted to be ignorant i would mention china’s massive growth rate although there aren’t many immigrants^^

but since that’s a special case, i got your point ;p

Yeah, China grows at around 10 percent and India grows at 8.5 percent. But they are developing countries(growing at a higher rate on a low base is easy!).

For more enlightenment on this issue, I suggest everyone go watch Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
ps: and have fun! ;)

Wasn’t the ethnic makeup of the French soccer team a major issue in France a couple world cups ago? I.E. non-white players like Zinedine Zidane and Tierry Henri?

yeah, 90% of the guys playing in teh french national soccer squad were from the colonised north african countries…

I remember reading something about how the majority of white French people would have preferred to have an all-white squad. Had that team not been so successful, I think the racism issue would have received more attention. There was an issue in the last world cup with some of the Italian players allegedly using racial epithets during the final.

No culture, country, or race can claim that it has never been “racist”, “bigoted”, or otherwise discriminatory toward another group. To do so is to bury your head in the sand.

Well, the true test is not about whether ‘pigheads’ are there in a country, but is about whether the safeguards are in place, for people of any race, color or background to flourish and do well.

Let me tell you, there are not many countries who provide equal ops to all.

Thankfully, the only superpower is one of those few countries which allows everybody to flourish.

(That should not be taken to mean that racial prejudices do not exist in USA,but to mean that there are in-built safeguards)

do you guys in the states hear about the banlieus of paris? streetfights of north african and arabic immigrants vs french police

Nothing specific to Paris, but friends who have studied in Europe have talked about racial tension in several countries.

Yeah iv heard about the baniliues. The’re the equivalent of Indian slums minus the fighting. Come election season every politician is out there searching for votes.

Figures that everybody ignores Canada when discussing multiculturalism. Well, just to one-up you dirty Americans (joking, joking), our head of state is a woman AND black. What now?

^^ I actually really love Canada in terms of multiculturalism
But climate… brr, if only it weren’t that cold over there, I’d have wanted to move there.
